“We start from here” – goalscorer Destiny reflects on Hammers outing

Destiny Udogie saw Tuesday’s clash with West Ham as a useful starting point for the season ahead – and was pleased with the added bonus of a goal!

Making his first appearance in our colours following his arrival last summer and immediate loan back to Udinese, the left-back was introduced as one of a raft of half-time changes in Perth and wasted no time in making an impact, heading home from Ivan Perisic’s corner to haul us back level, just moments after Giovani Lo Celso had got us back into the game at 2-1.

Unfortunately, the Hammers stole a 3-2 victory when Gianluca Scamacca broke in behind our high defensive line and slotted home with just over 10 minutes to go.

But with the final shot count ending 30 to four in our favour, Destiny felt there was plenty to build on.

It was the first game, we have to get to know ourselves better, know the coach and we start from here.

“Obviously it’s always crazy when you don’t win a game like this with 30 shots – this is football, sometimes it’s like this,” he said.

“We were unlucky but we played our football, we kept the ball, I think the fans enjoyed it and that was the most important thing in the first game – to feel good and play football.

“It was the first game, we have to get to know ourselves better, know the coach and we start from here. It was important for me to get minutes, to play football and to feel good in myself. Obviously it’s pre-season so we have to work hard, but I’m very happy for my first goal and I hope for more.”
