Everyone knows the James Maddison we see on the pitch - one of the best creative, attacking midfielders in the modern game, a player who has risen from League One to the Premier League and into England’s World Cup squad last season.

But what about ‘Madders’ off it?

His love for football is there for all to see, but what makes him tick away from the footballing spotlight? After joining us from Leicester City last week, we had the chance to dig a little deeper, and here’s what he had to say…

Football...

“I love football, I do, I always watch football, always talk football, I’m a football man, as I’ve said many times. It was always going to be football for me, always. As soon as I could walk, I was kicking a ball. Dad’s got loads of videos of me in the garden, kicking a ball around.
"That’s the same for many of us footballers, it’s that from the start. You see a lot of stuff these days about footballers maybe falling out of love with the game, but I can’t see that ever happening to me. Hopefully I can bring that enthusiasm and love of football to this club, and it will translate to good stuff on the pitch.”

Family…

“I’ve a little boy with my partner, he’s everything to me, and we’ve two on the way very soon (congratulations to James - his partner gave birth to twins on Tuesday). It’s been a whirlwind few weeks, actually, because we’re getting close to that due date with all this stuff happening in the background. My family is everything and I can’t wait to have my family at the games at our unbelievable stadium. My mum and dad have been with me from the start, my little brother Ben... family is everything.”

Fatherhood…

“It probably makes you more rounded, more appreciative of stuff. It’s difficult being a parent now, and I think all parents would say that, especially in the early stages. It probably doesn’t get easier as you go through the stages of being a parent. But the love you have for your child is unconditional. I know everyone says that, but that’s why everyone says it. I can’t wait to become a dad again very soon.”

Fashion…

“I love fashion, I love being a little bit different and wearing stuff that I feel comfortable in. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, your cup of tea or someone else’s, but that’s what fashion is, it’s what you feel comfortable in, for you. If you look in the mirror and feel comfortable in what you are wearing, that is fashion, I think. I goes in swings and roundabouts, but that’s a little hobby that I enjoy outside football.”

Dogs…

“My dogs… I love my dogs so much! Diego and Denzel. It’s little and large. Diego is a little French bulldog and Denzel is a protection Cane Corso. One is 6kg, the other’s 66kg! Who doesn’t love dogs? Dogs are one of the best things, they just love you no matter what, whatever day you are having.”
