Ange on his coaching team: “They will leave no stone unturned”

Mon 03 July 2023, 12:45|Tottenham Hotspur

Ange Postecoglou said he wanted to be surrounded with ‘bright, talented and ambitious guys’ as he put his coaching staff together.

There is certainly a strong Spurs influence in Ange’s team with three coaches who have come through our Academy initially as players, then as coaches - Ryan Mason, Matt Wells and Rob Burch. They are joined by Chris Davies and Mile Jedinak with pre-season work starting in earnest over the weekend at Hotspur Way.

Chris, who has previously worked on the coaching staff at Swansea City, Liverpool, Celtic and Leicester City, joins as Senior Assistant Coach while Mile, with eight years of experience as a Premier League midfielder at Palace and Villa, and Ange’s captain during his time as manager of Australia (Mile was capped 79 times, 2008-2018), joins as Assistant Coach.

Ryan and Matt are also appointed as Ange’s Assistant Coaches having worked together during Ryan’s second stint as interim Head Coach at the end of last season. Meanwhile Rob, a goalkeeper who came through our youth set up in the early-2000s, returns to the Club as First Team Goalkeeping Coach, having previously served as Academy Goalkeeping Coach until 2019. He has since held coaching roles with the Football Association, Fulham, AFC Bournemouth and Club Brugge.

“It’s hugely important,” Ange told SPURSPLAY on the appointment of his coaching team. If we’re going to do all these things that will hopefully provide a team that excites and wins things then off the field, we have to make sure that the players have everything they need, starting with the coaches, which is one of the most important aspects.

“I’m really pleased with the group I’ve got together. It's well chronicled that I don’t have a travelling band (of coaches), I like to work with new people, that excites me and challenges me as a person. I’ve a really good mix, bright, young guys... it’s been mentioned to me that, apparently, I’m getting a bit old, so I’m surrounding myself with younger guys! But, more importantly, really bright, talented and ambitious guys.

“We’ve got guys who know this football club really well in Ryan, Matt and Rob, coming through the Academy, so they know the whole Spurs experience and what it means. It’s great to have them.

“Chris is someone I’ve followed from afar and, again, he’s a really ambitious young guy. Mile, I know really well. He was captain of my national team and he’s a very determined bloke to bring success wherever he is. I know success will follow him. He’s been a leader from a very young age and a very good mind in terms of football. It’s a great mix. We have a major challenge ahead of us and I know these guys will leave no stone unturned.”
