Spurs 2-0 Chelsea
Premier League

Team news

Spurs unchanged
We were unchanged from the win over West Ham last weekend, which meant another start for Richarlison with Heung-Min Son among the substitutes. That meant Ben Davies made his landmark 300th Spurs appearance in all competitions, while Pedro Porro came off the bench late on to make his home debut for us.

Six changes for Chelsea
Chelsea made six changes to the side that lost against Southampton in their last Premier League outing with Thiago Silva, Reece James, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Raheem Sterling and Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz all starting. Among their substitutes was recent signing and our former Academy player Noni Madueke, who was with us until his Under-16 year before joining PSV in 2018.
The report...
Oliver Skipp scored a stunning first-ever goal for Spurs to set us on the way to a battling 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Academy graduate and boyhood Spurs fan produced a moment of magic seconds after the interval to open the scoring against our London rivals, before Harry Kane wrapped up the Premier League points with a close-range finish eight minutes from time, giving us back-to-back derby wins following last week’s success against West Ham United.
The first half saw Chelsea have more of the possession, but there was very little in the way of clear chances and, in fact, the only shot on target in the half came on 18 minutes, Joao Felix’s effort straight at Fraser Forster.
But we went closest to opening the scoring on 27 minutes when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s strike from 20 yards flicked off the boot of substitute Wesley Fofana and struck the post before Chelsea cleared.
There were plenty of robust challenges and breaks in play during the first period, while most of the drama came in stoppage time following a melee involving a number of players from both sides.
At the end of it, Emerson Royal and Kai Havertz were booked and referee Stuart Attwell then brandished a red card to Hakim Ziyech for what appeared to be a hand in the face of Royal. But the official then went to look at the incident again on the pitchside monitor and downgraded the red card to a yellow.
For all the huff and puff of the first half, it took just 20 seconds after the break for us to take the lead!
We worked an opening for Royal, whose shot was saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga, Enzo Fernandez cleared the ball but Skipp beat Joao Felix to the ball and hit a right-foot half volley from 22-yards out that beat the keeper and went in off the crossbar.
Chelsea had more spells of possession as they chased the game but we defended superbly and, when they did find a way through in the 67th minute, Forster was smartly off his line to smother at the feet of Havertz.
It always felt like we had the game under control and added a second eight minutes from time to seal the points. Heung-Min Son delivered the corner, his first touch after coming off the bench, Eric Dier flicked it on and Kane was there to smash home at the back post. Job done!

Key moment
It was a fairly uneventful goalless first half apart from some strong tackles, as you’d expect in a London derby, so the opening goal was always going to be pivotal and it certainly turned out that way. There were probably plenty of fans who still hadn’t made it back to their seats after the interval when Oliver Skipp smashed home his first goal in our colours, just 20 seconds after the restart. It gave us something to defend and we stuck to that task in style before adding a second through Harry Kane.

Goal of the game
Oliver Skipp (46) - Spurs 1-0 Chelsea

Star of the show - Oliver Skipp
This was probably one of the hardest games of the season to pick a standout player as everyone played their part in this victory. The likes of Ben Davies, Cristian Romero, Emerson Royal, Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski were all impressive on the day but the main man has to be Oliver Skipp. It wasn’t just the goal - a superb strike by the way - but also the way he stood tall in the heat of a London derby, snapping into tackles, always wanting to receive the ball, keeping it moving as a link between defence and attack and just generally excellent in every facet of his game.

Stats a fact!

Goal-den moment for Skippy
Oliver Skipp’s goal was his first for Spurs on his 67th appearance in our colours. He had only ever scored once before in his career, while on loan at Norwich City in a 3-1 win over Birmingham City in February 2021.

20 goals again for Harry
Harry Kane’s goal took him to 20 for the season in all competitions, and that’s the ninth consecutive campaign he’s reached that tally. It took him to 268 in total for Spurs, while he also became the first player to score home and away for us against Chelsea in a league campaign since Gary Lineker in 1990/91.

First win v Blues at new stadium
The result saw our first goals and first win in the Premier League against Chelsea at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Blues had won all three of our previous PL meetings here without conceding, making this result all the more sweeter.
Cristian's comment...
“It was a great performance because, from the start, we were ready to fight for every ball. We showed the desire to win every tackle and that was the most important thing from the start. After, 20, 25 minutes, we started to play well. The players were good to understand that moment. We were lucid in that moment and started to play well with the ball and in possession. It’s an important win because it’s the first game in a busy run, so it was important to continue the momentum. We want to be consistent, and we were today, but we have to continue. So, every day, we close the book, then you open the next book for the next game, and the next game will be important because it’s an FA Cup game, and we want to continue our run.”

What it means
With Newcastle United not playing in the league this weekend due to their Carabao Cup Final involvement, this was a great opportunity to extend our lead over them in the table. Our win consolidated our position in fourth place and we now sit four points ahead of the Magpies, although they do have two games in hand. We’re only four points behind Manchester United in third - and still have to play both of those teams.
Up next...
It’s back to the FA Cup this midweek as we had to Bramall Lane to take on Sheffield United in the fifth round. The Blades currently sit second in the Championship, 12 points behind leaders Burnley, and they beat Watford 1-0 yesterday. They’ve overcome Millwall and Wrexham to reach this stage of the FA Cup. Our last trip to Bramall Lane ended in a 3-1 Premier League defeat in January 2021, while we haven’t met in the FA Cup since way back in January 1958, United winning 3-0 at the Lane. Kick-off on Wednesday night is 7.55pm, with the game live on BBC One.
