Five... goals from full-backs against West Ham
Tue 21 February 2023, 16:30|Tottenham Hotspur
Emerson Royal is the latest addition to a special band of brothers at Spurs - full-backs, and notably right-backs, scoring big goals against West Ham in the Premier League!
It started with Paul Stalteri's late, late winner in the 4-3 thriller at Upton Park, matched seven years later when Eric Dier made a debut to remember with a 93rd-minute strike to secure the points in east London in August, 2014. Kyle Walker and Danny Rose weighed in with goals at White Hart Lane, not forgetting another Brazilian, Gilberto, on target in a 4-0 win in 2007.
Now, step up Emerson, whose cool-as-you-like finish in front of the South Stand crucially broke the deadlock against the Hammers on Sunday, paving the way for a 2-0 win that took us back up to fourth in the Premier League.
Here are five full-back goals to remember against West Ham...
04.03.2007 | Paul Stalteri | West Ham 3-4 Spurs
A game that had the lot. We were chasing European qualification, West Ham were fighting for survival. West Ham led 2-0 and 3-2, only for us to hit back and win it in dramatic fashion at the end. A quick recap - Mark Noble and Carlos Tevez put West Ham 2-0 up, Jermain Defoe and a lovely strike from Teemu Tainio levelled it up on 63 minutes, Bobby Zamera headed West Ham back into the lead with five minutes left only for Dimitar Berbatov to clip home a free-kick on 89 and then Stalteri's winner. Few fans will forget the vision of the full-back running the length of the field in added time to support Defoe's breakaway, and he was on the spot to tap in when Robert Green parried JD's shot. West Ham were bottom after this result but recovered to finish 12th. We lost just one ofour last 12 to finish fifth.
Watch it all again...
16.08.14 | Eric Dier | West Ham 0-1 Spurs
Signed from Sporting Lisbon that summer, Eric Dier's debut couldn't have been much more eventful. Initially lining-up in central defence, Kyle Naughton's red card for handball after just 29 minutes saw the defender shift to right-back with Etienne Capoue partnering Younes Kaboul. Mark Noble missed the penalty and our 10 men held their own until James Collins' second yellow levelled the teams up. Andros Townsend forced a fine save from Adrian, Hugo Lloris denied Stewart Downing and then Eric's moment - Harry Kane threaded a pass between defenders for his run, and he skipped past Adrian before slotting home with his left foot.
22.02.2015 | Danny Rose | Spurs 2-2 West Ham
Right in the middle of a crucial spell of matches including the north London derby, Liverpool, two legs against Fiorentina in the Europa League and the League Cup Final against Chelsea, we found ourselves 2-0 down against West Ham with only 10 minutes left of another fiery derby at White Hart Lane. We started well, and Harry Kane hit the post, but goals from Diafra Sakho and Cheikhou Kouyate put the visitors in charge, and Hugo Lloris saved point-blank from Enner Valencia to prevent a third. We needed a spark and found it when Danny Rose met Adrian's punch from a corner, volleyed into the ground and back over the keeper into the net with nine minute to go. Then, in added time, Kane was bundled over, a penalty awarded, Harry's spot-kick was initially saved by Adrian but he was first to the rebound to level it up with 96 minutes on the clock.
22.11.2015 | Kyle Walker | Spurs 4-1 West Ham
This was a much more comfortable afternoon against the Hammers. We dominated, racked up 22 efforts at goal including 12 on target, a Premier League high at time for the 2015/16 season. Harry Kane scored twice, Toby Alderweireld nodded home from Christian Eriksen's corner and then the pick of the bunch from Kyle Walker. 'Walks' played the ball into Heung-Min Son, took the return and pinged home with the outside of his right foot into the top corner, a beauty as we made it 12 unbeaten at the start of a campaign where we'd finish third in the Premier League to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
19.02.2023 | Emerson Royal | Spurs 2-0 West Ham
Emerson Royal became the latest full-back/wing-back to deliver against the Hammers on Sunday. Again, the goal arrived just in time, after a tough first half with few chances ended goalless. You sensed the first goal was vital and we did it in style, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg provided one of the passes of the season into Ben Davies' run and it was wing-back to wing-back as he slid into the path of supporting Emerson, who in turn rolled the ball past Lukasz Fabianski, a finish any forward would be proud of. Emerson dedicated the goal to his pregnant girlfriend, Estela, and Heung-Min Son quickly put the game to bed with the second goal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
