The Vaccines

"When I moved to London in 2007, I barely even knew what the Premier League was..."
Arni Arnason, The Vaccines

"I’d grown up in Iceland, which is more Americanised than Icelanders would ever admit, so football wasn’t really on my radar as a kid.

"Sure, you had the older generation that invariably supported Liverpool or Man Utd, and their kids that followed in their dads’ leads, but for myself and my peers football was an optional background noise. You could take it or leave it..."

"Shortly after moving, I realised that if I was to ever have a modicum of a social life, an opinion of football was needed..."

"So I - quite reluctantly - tried to keep up with what was going on. A friend of mine who’s an ardent Spurs supporter saw an opportunity for an easy convert and started indoctrinating me with Spurs propaganda and eventually invited me to go with him to the opening match of the 2010/2011 season. I obviously accepted and haven't looked back since.

"White Hart Lane was the most electrifying place I had ever been to in my life and I'm yet to experience anything like it. Manchester City were visiting and the result was a goalless draw, but as all supporters know, that seemingly mundane scoreboard only tells a portion of the story. For example, it doesn't tell the story of the clueless idiot that’s attending his first game and falling in love with the beautiful game without even having seen someone score a goal.

"This was around the same time as The Vaccines started touring, and our first proper tour manager was the most lovably unhinged Spurs supporter I’ve met. His love for the team was infectious and permeated every single conversation he had with anyone. It was like catnip for the newly converted like myself. We went to every match we could and Spurs quickly became the only stable in an otherwise wild existence of constant travelling."

"My favourite moment as a Spurs fan is a pinch myself moment that defies belief..."

"I got asked to do a pitchside interview at half-time of another match against City and the impostor syndrome almost killed me. I couldn’t believe the club was asking a recently converted bass player from an indie band to do this. However nervous I was, I had to accept it. It was too crazy to turn down.

"As I arrived at the stadium, I got escorted to a box and introduced to none other than the living legend that is Ledley King. I was so starstruck I could barely speak but as it turned out we were sharing the box that afternoon, so I had to retain some level of cool in order to avoid a further social faux pas, let alone a heart attack!

"City scored early on and Ledley turned to me, shook his head and with a deflated look on his face said, '17-2'. I snapped out of my starstruck daze and realised this was serious stuff. Spurs hadn’t beaten Man City in over two years and prior to kick-off that day, the aggregate score between the clubs over the previous two seasons was in fact 16-2. This had every opportunity to become an absolute bloodbath and I was supposed to be the half-time entertainment? Oh dear...

"A few minutes after that reminder of past humiliations, I got escorted to the players’ tunnel where I was to wait for my interview. I was stood nervously shivering, waiting to be ushered onto the pitch for what felt like would be a eulogy, when all of a sudden an almighty roar shook the building to its core. Eric Dier had just equalised and in a frantic craze I ran screaming out of the tunnel, only to be manhandled by a group of security guards before I made it onto the actual pitch. I ran back inside, hysterically celebrating with the very same guards, until a few seconds later the half-time whistle blew and we had to try and regain our composure as the players filtered towards us into the tunnel.

"There’s no way to describe the earth shattering noise that permeated the depths of that building when Dier scored. Nothing will ever compare to the condensed energy of a fired up Spurs crowd. The sport is nothing without its passionate supporters.

"I moved back to Iceland during Covid, and since then my opportunities to attend matches have been fairly limited. However, The Vaccines are back on the road in 2024, and as Spurs are to this day the only constant in an otherwise crazy life, I’m excited to be spending every possible moment with the club.

"See you in 2024! COYS!"

"PS: Ledley had nothing to worry about, we beat them 4-1..."
