Bethany England on our famous derby victory: “I could not be any prouder"

Fri 22 December 2023, 12:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Captain Bethany England expressed her pride at her teammates’ performance in the historic victory over Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last weekend.

With almost 20.000 fans at our world-class home in N17, they were able to witness history being made as Martha Thomas’ second half strike secured a famous 1-0 victory over Arsenal - the first-ever win over our local rivals.

While it was a memorable day for the team, Bethany was also celebrating a personal achievement of her own as the victory over the Gunners was our captain’s 150th appearance in the FA Women’s Super League.

Speaking to SPURSPLAY after the game, unsurprisingly, Bethany was beaming with immense pride: “Honestly, the team gave everything,” she said proudly. “I asked for fight before the game and we gave them a fight, we gave them a good game earlier in that week - it can be difficult playing the same side twice in a week. I just can’t believe we did it. What a great stadium, great set of fans, a great performance from the team and I could not be any prouder.”

The victory over our local rivals ended a difficult run of results in the Women’s Super League - with two heavy defeats to Manchester United and Manchester City prior to the fixture with the Gunners – but an excellent first half of the campaign sees us head into the festive break sitting sixth in the table and just three points off last season’s points tally.

“Merry Christmas everyone - we have finally made North London white,” she beamed. “I’m absolutely chuffed to bits. I could have not asked for anymore from this team and everyone gave so much. I know we had some bad results, but this one has made it all worth it.”
