Spurs 2-0 United | Vicario’s insight into key saves

Mon 21 August 2023, 14:45|Tottenham Hotspur

Practice makes perfect - as Guglielmo Vicario proved against Manchester United on Saturday.

The goalkeeper made a couple of big saves at big times as we ended up deserved winners thanks to second half goals from Pape Sarr and Lisandro Martinez’s own goal.

First up, ‘Vic’ made himself big at the near post to deny Marcus Rashford with the scoreline goalless in the first half. Then, just after Pape’s opener, an eye-catching reaction save to tip over Casemiro’s point-blank header.

Speaking after the win, Guglielmo talked us through the saves, particularly from Casemiro.

“For Rashford, instead of going out, I tried to cover as much space as I can. It was a good save in the first half. Casemiro... it was close to the goal, a strong header and I thought I made a big save in a big moment of the match. We were 1-0 up and we were pushing, but if you go 1-1 it could be a different game.

“It’s something we work on a lot, and we try to react as quickly as possible to the header. There is a lot of work behind the scenes, and I have to keep working a lot, because I want to improve every day. To be able to help my team-mates... it’s our win, we deserve it a lot.”

Vic echoed the feeling in the dressing room that the collective is more important than any individual accolades. “I’m happy, but the most important thing for me is to give help to my team-mates because when we win, we win all together.

“The happiest thing for this match is winning together. We suffered as well, but we attacked, played such good football. We are so happy, we have to enjoy it, but now we have to focus on the next one, to keep working. We are in a good mental and physical state now, but the league is so hard, we have to stay focussed and try to improve.”
