Pape Sarr: "I can hardly start to describe how it felt to score that goal"

Pape Sarr has spoken about the moment his first goal for Spurs struck the back of the net to set up a memorable victory against Manchester United.

The Senegal international midfielder arrived with perfect timing to meet Deki Kulusevski’s cross and dispatch his shot into the roof of the net to open the scoring four minutes into the second half of the Premier League encounter at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Victory was secured later when Lisandro Martinez deflected home Ben Davies’ effort from Ivan Perisic’s cross.

Scoring a goal in a match like that one is really something special... I’m happy how I did, and happy with our team performance

Signed from Metz in August, 2021, Pape, 20, opened his account in his 16th appearance in all competitions.

Back in training this week at Hotspur Way, Pape told us: “Well, it was an unbelievable moment. Scoring a goal in a match like that one is really something special. I can hardly start to describe for you how it felt to score at that instant, but there it was, and you have to put that behind you now and concentrate on the next match ahead.

“No question that Manchester United is a big club, and to score goals against big clubs like that is really something exceptionally great for me. So, I’m happy how I did, and happy with our team performance in the match.”

It was no surprise to see Pape on the end of Deki’s cross - he’d been making those supporting runs into the box  throughout the game and had five efforts at goal, forcing a reaction save from Andre Onana in the first half.

Asked how it felt when he scored and ran to the fans in the South Stand, Pape said: “Yes, I really felt them (the fans), as they were right behind us all through the match and they were driving us on, and that’s why when I scored the goal, I set off right towards the fans at the byline.

“As for the box to box runs, that’s one of my attributes, so I was making those box to box runs throughout, and there was a large space that opened up for me when I scored, I felt the ball was going to arrive straight into my run and it came at just the right moment for me to make the goal.”
