Brentford 2-2 Spurs
Premier League

First-half goals from Cristian Romero and Emerson Royal gave us an opening-weekend point as a new era for us began with a 2-2 draw at Brentford on Sunday afternoon.
Taking to the field in the Premier League for the first time under Ange Postecoglou and with a host of new faces in the squad - we gave full debuts to four players at the Gtech Community Stadium - it took us just 10 minutes to get off the mark, defender Romero heading home James Maddison's free-kick.
The Bees fought back during a dramatic first half to lead through Bryan Mbeumo's penalty and Yoane Wissa's strike, but Royal's low drive from the edge of the box during an extended period of first-half stoppage time ensured we've now drawn all three of our visits to Brentford's new home.
Maddison, joined in the starting line-up by fellow debutants Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie, was key to our positive start, winning a free-kick at the left-hand corner of Brentford's box and whipping in a dangerous delivery that Romero headed home. A VAR check confirmed Romero was just onside as he scored - but sadly his afternoon ended there as he was forced off after a collision with Mbeumo a few moments before the goal.
Mbeumo and Wissa tested Vicario before the hosts found a lifeline when the VAR asked referee Robert Jones to look at new captain Heung-Min Son's challenge on Mathias Jensen in the box - a penalty was ultimately given and Mbeumo converted, much to the delight of the home crowd. Wissa was subsequently denied by a superb tackle from behind by substitute Davinson Sanchez as he burst through for Brentford, but the same player did find the target on 36 minutes, converting Rico Henry's cut-back via a slight deflection after a free-kick from inside the home side's half caught us out.
Son fired wide from a tight angle as we sought a response, and one duly arrived out of nothing when Maddison's square ball across the edge of the box came to Royal, who smartly fired a low, first-time shot into the bottom corner in the fifth of 11 added minutes at the end of the opening period.
Mbeumo should have scored moments later when he fired off-target at the first time of asking when completely free in the box, but the second half was a much quieter affair in terms of chances. Vicario made a routine double save to deny Vitaly Janelt and Mikkel Damsgaard before Brentford's own debutant stopper Mark Flekken denied Son at the near post, then beat away Richarlison's rising shot after some fluid play from the excellent Yves Bissouma and Maddison a few moments later. Zanka's late cross caused problems for Vicario late on, but he swiped it away on the stretch and although we kept the pressure on in the last few minutes, we there was to be no winning goal.

Ange's verdict...
"I thought overall, pleased with the effort of the players, they gave everything, a good starting point for us. There was a fair bit going on in the first half and it would have been easy for the lads to lose their composure, drop their heads, but I thought they handled themselves really well. We controlled the game well in the second half, but we just lacked a bit of a threat in the front third, a little bit of creativity, but considering everything that happened, overall, I thought it was a good performance."
