Ashley Phillips: “It’s really good to make my debut for the Club”

Tue 22 August 2023, 18:04|Tottenham Hotspur

Ashley Phillips spoke of a “really enjoyable” debut in our colours after helping our Under-21s defeat Newcastle United 4-1 at the weekend.

A summer signing from Blackburn Rovers, the 18-year-old defender got his first minutes under his belt as a Spurs player with a full shift in our excellent Premier League 2 victory over the Magpies at Stevenage on Saturday lunchtime before being whisked away to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where he was introduced on the pitch along with our other new recruits prior to our 2-0 win over Manchester United.

“It’s really good to make my debut – it was a great result and all the boys did well,” smiled Ashley, speaking to SPURSPLAY.

“The match was really enjoyable – everyone played well, defensively we were strong, it’s just a shame that we didn’t get the clean sheet in the end, although four goals, you can’t complain about that.

“We scored some really good goals – when we beat their press we ended up getting shots off, so it was a really good performance tactically.”

The lads have really been great with me and helped me to settle in, so it’s just about kicking on now.

The win over Newcastle continued our Under-21s’ excellent start to the season following our 5-0 triumph over reigning champions Manchester City on the opening day, with Ashley coming into the side to partner the impressive Alfie Dorrington against the Magpies.

“I’ve played with him a couple of times for England so we had that partnership already, but it was really good to join him in a Spurs shirt,” smiled the centre-back, who went on to explain how his first few weeks at the Club have been full of positives.

“It’s been really enjoyable,” he underlined. “The lads have really been great with me and helped me to settle in, so it’s just about kicking on now.”
