Michael Brown, 46, played 64 times for us between 2004-06, and clocked up 650 appearances in a career spanning 24 years at the likes of City, Sheffield United, Fulham and Leeds, including a spell as manager of Port Vale.
He’s since launched a successful career in the media and has worked for the likes of BBC Sport, Radio Five Live, Sky Sports, BT Sport and Quest TV.
On Sunday, he’ll take part in the London Marathon...
Browny’s story...
“I was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma during lockdown. It was a mole on my back. Luckily, I caught it early, there’s nothing long-term and it’s gone now. The Christie Charity were good to me, and I felt it would be good to give something back to them and get fit at the same time. The London Marathon is something I'd always wanted to do. It’s been a challenge, 40 miles a week and now I’m all set for Sunday. People think, ‘he’ll do that easily because he used to be a professional footballer’, but it’s not as easy as that. Yes, I was fit - years ago! I was built to play football and that means I’m heavier for my size... someone my size might run the marathon at 65kg, whereas I’m running at 83kg, and all this running doesn’t help the joints! I’m also well aware of the mental side of it, ‘hitting the wall’. I did 22 miles recently, more than I had run before, and at 19 miles I had to stop, there was nothing left, and I had to limp over the line. Hopefully now, a few weeks down the line, I’ll be able to get to the 26, especially with the adrenaline of the event and the crowd. It’s a huge challenge, a great cause, hopefully I’ll raise a few quid and it will be a box ticked for me. I’m sure it will be something special.”
