Newcastle United 6-1 Spurs

Premier League

A woeful first half contributed to a crushing defeat at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon as Newcastle United took the points with a 6-1 win.

The Magpies were 5-0 up after 21 minutes, scoring with five of their first six shots on target and, although Harry Kane pulled one back early in the second half with his 24th Premier League goal of the campaign, the hosts added a sixth to round off a disappointing encounter.

We started the game with a four-man defence but just two minutes had passed when Joelinton’s low drive was parried out to his left by Hugo Lloris and Jacob Murphy slammed the loose ball high into the net.

Then, Joelinton latched on to Fabian Schar’s ball over the top, rounded Lloris and slotted home before Schar stole in to dispossess Heung-Min Son from Eric Dier’s pass, he found Murphy, who turned and drilled into the far corner from 30 yards. That was 3-0 inside 10 minutes.

Harry Kane saw a shot whistle just wide from Oliver Skipp’s pull back before the home side attacked again. Joe Willock played a pass with the outside of his right foot to release Alexander Isak, who tucked the ball home past Lloris and two minutes later, Murphy and Sean Longstaff combined to set up Isak, who scored again from a tight angle in the 21st minute.

A change in personnel followed for us, Davinson Sanchez replacing Pape Matar Sarr as we reverted to a more familiar three at the back and we had another chance soon after but Dejan Kulusevski curled well wide.

Another substitution came at half-time as Fraser Forster took over from Lloris between the sticks and we made a better start to the second period when Kane skipped past Schar down the left and fired a low left-footed shot into the far corner. Heung-Min Son almost added a second but his effort was blocked on the edge of the six-yard box by Schar.

Instead Newcastle added a sixth on 67 minutes, two substitutes combining seconds after coming on as Miguel Almiron’s shot deflected into the path of Callum Wilson and he scored from close range.

In team news, Cristian Stellini made one change to the team that lost against AFC Bournemouth last week. Clement Lenglet, a doubt for the game with a foot issue that forced him off last week, was on the bench, replaced by Sarr.
