Ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (3pm), our latest 'five...' feature takes a look at players who came through our youth ranks and later played for AFC Bournemouth...
Lee Barnard
Spurs 2000-08; Bournemouth 2012-13
An aggressive striker and instinctive finisher, ‘Barney’ joined our Academy full-time in July, 2000, signing professional forms in 2002. A regular goalscorer at youth and reserve level, his 19 goals in 19 games as we won the FA Premier Reserve League South title in 2005/06 earned call-ups to first team friendlies and, ultimately, his first team debut against Manchester United in April, 2006, one of three substitute appearances that season. However, with the likes of Dimitar Berbatov, Jermain Defoe, Robbie Keane and Mido around, chances were limited, and he had to overcome his fair share of injuries as well. Lee’s spell at Bournemouth came on loan in 2012/13, where he scored five goals in League One. Now 38, he also had spells at 10 other league clubs, with notable success at Southend (37 goals in 85 appearances, 2007-09) and Southampton (24 in 73, 2010-12) before ending his career in non-league football at Braintree, Chelmsford and Maldon & Tiptree.
Charlie Daniels
Spurs 2003-2009; Bournemouth 2012-2020
Equally at home at left-back or on the left side of midfield, Charlie Daniels joined our Academy full-time in July, 2003, signing professional forms two years later. He played in pre-season friendlies against Kaizer Chiefs and Stevenage Borough in the summer of 2007 but didn’t quite make the breakthrough, moving to Leyton Orient in January, 2009. His career blossomed from there, and a move to Bournemouth in 2012 would take him through the divisions to the Premier League. He played 265 times for the Cherries, including 129 appearances in the Premier League. Now 36, Charlie had spells at Shrewsbury, Portsmouth and Colchester before retiring this year. He’s currently Watford’s Under-18 lead coach.
Adam Smith
Spurs 2007-2014; Bournemouth 2010/11, 2014-
Now in his 10th season at Bournemouth, and likely to line-up against us on Saturday, Adam joined our Academy full-time in July, 2007 and signed professional forms a year later. A flying right full-back who loves to bomb forward, he was just 17 when he appeared in friendlies against Leyton Orient and Borussia Dortmund in 2008, but it wasn’t until May, 2012 that he made his first team debut off the bench against Fulham in the Premier League. Bournemouth was one of Adam’s seven loan spells during his time at Spurs, an impressive 42 games in League One in 2011/12. Capped across five England youth levels, including 11 caps for the Under-21s, he made just one more appearance for us before returning to the Vitality in 2014. Then in the Championship, Adam, now 31, helped the Cherries to promotion to the Premier League in 2015 and has racked up over 150 appearances in the Premier League since for the Cherries, and 286 in all competitions.
Ryan Fredericks
Spurs 2009-2014; Bournemouth 2022-
Another flying full-back, Ryan joined our Academy full-time in July, 2009 and signed professional forms a year later. He was one of a clutch of players trusted by Harry Redknapp to play Europa League football in 2011/12 alongside the likes of Harry Kane, Andros Townsend, Tom Carroll, Iago Falque and Jake Nicholson. Ryan made his debut against Hearts - in the same game as Harry Kane - in August, 2011 and played three times that campaign, aged 18. Loan spells followed at Brentford, Millwall and Middlesbrough before he joined Bristol City on a permanent deal in 2015. He moved from there to Fulham and after three seasons at Craven Cottage, got his break in the Premier League with a switch to West Ham in 2018. Now 30, Ryan played 77 times for the Hammers before joining Bournemouth at the start of this season.
Cameron Carter-Vickers
Spurs 2014-2022; Bournemouth 2020-21
A powerful, robust central defender, good on the ball, Cameron joined our Academy full-time in July, 2014, signing professional forms in December, 2014. Just under two years later, and still only 18, he made his first team debut under Mauricio Pochettino in the League Cup against Gillingham. That was one of four appearances that season but it wasn’t until last season, 2021/22, that he made his fifth and ultimately last in our colours against Pacos de Ferreira in the UEFA Conference League. In-between, he enjoyed a number of loan spells, including a successful time at Bournemouth under Jonathan Woodgate in 2020/21, where he made 26 appearances. Capped 11 times by the USA, Cameron, now 24, spent 2021/22 on loan at Celtic, where he won the SPL and League Cup double, and joined the Hoops on a permanent deal this summer.
