Harry Kane said it was ‘hard to put into words’ the emotions of recovering from 3-0 down to draw level with Liverpool in injury time, only to concede again seconds later.
Having conceded three goals in the opening 15 minutes, Harry led the comeback with his 25th Premier League goal of the season to go level in second all-time in the competition alongside Wayne Rooney on 208 before Heung-Min Son (77) and Richarlison (93, his first Premier League goal for us) gave us reward for an impressive second half by bringing us back to 3-3. However, with 94.44 on the clock, Alisson aimed downfield and Lucas Moura inadvertently played the ball into the path of Diogo Jota, who drilled home the winner.
To go through all that effort, determination and desire, to come back... to then give it away so cheaply at the end, it’s just hard to put into words
Overall thoughts...
Harry: “It’s gutting with what happened at the end. The first 20 minutes, just unacceptable again. Then, for 60, 70 minutes, we had the better chances, created really good chances, hit the post a few times, Alisson made some good saves and we fully deserved to get back into the game like we did, but to go through all that effort, determination and desire, to come back at one of the hardest away grounds in the Premier League to then give it away so cheaply at the end, it’s just hard to put into words.”
On the start...
“We have to understand these moments as a team, going away to Anfield, to St James’ Park, intense atmospheres and what happened is exactly what they wanted, to be on the front foot. We have to be better in those moments, slow the game down, dictate the tempo.”
On the comeback...
“We showed patience. The boss showed great patience, even at half-time he said not to get carried away and try to win the game in the first 10 minutes, he knew we’d get chances and if we kept plugging away at it, if we kept a clean sheet in the second half, we’d get something out of the game, and he was so close to being right. Ultimately though, when you lose like this, it’s hard to take. We have to move on. We’ve four games left, and we have to try to build some momentum, starting at home on Saturday.”
