On this day in 2019… West Ham 0-2 Spurs

Thu 29 September 2022, 08:00|Tottenham Hotspur

The stage was set for an upset as heavy rain poured in east London for the London Stadium’s first ever Women’s Super League game on 29 September, 2019.

But Spurs Women, recently promoted from the Women’s Championship, came flying out of the traps, and it was Rianna Dean, heading into the bottom left corner expertly from Rosella Ayane’s cross, who gave us the lead.

Dean’s strike represented our first ever WSL goal from open play.

In the 84th minute, three points were secured as Lucy Quinn, on as a substitute for Dean, latched onto a goalmouth scramble and smashed the ball into the bottom left on her birthday.

We had fewer shots and less possession of the ball than West Ham United, but were clearly more clinical with our chances in front of the 24,790 fans at the stadium.

It was then the second largest crowd in WSL history.

After the game, then-Tottenham manager Karen Hills said: “The girls were outstanding and thoroughly deserved it. The girls are learning from experiences. We’ve only been together a very short amount of time. The experienced players lead but the younger ones are really relishing the opportunities to play in the big games and they’re holding their own.”
