Match preview: Leicester City Women v Spurs Women

Sat 17 September 2022, 10:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Our 2022/23 Women’s Super League campaign begins against Leicester City Women at the King Power Stadium on Sunday (3pm UK).

Following the postponement of last weekend’s game against Manchester United Women, Sunday’s game represents the first chance for us to see our seven new signings in competitive action.

🆚 The opposition

Last season, Leicester were bottom of the WSL after losing their first nine games, but then won four of their next six to climb to tenth. They survived by finishing two points ahead of Birmingham City at the end of 2021/22.

During the summer, the Foxes have completed the signings of Welsh forward Ellen Jones from Colorado Buffaloes, former Spurs midfielder Josie Green, midfielder Aileen Whelan from Brighton & Hove Albion, American defender Erin Simon and Carrie Jones, who is on loan from Manchester United.

We won 2-0 on our previous visit to Leicester thanks to goals from Rachel Williams and Angela Addison. Last time we met, however, was at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the end of last season, Ash Neville’s goal securing a 1-0 win.

💬 Rehanne's quotes

“Going into this weekend, it will be a mixture of wanting to get the league season underway with it being our first game and people looking forward to that, but then obviously at the same time the tributes that we’re going to be paying are quite emotional with the week we’ve had as a nation," Rehanne Skinner said in her pre-match press conference on Thursday.

“Hopefully, we’re able to focus on the football and get ourselves underway with a game that fits how we want to start our season.

“The extra training days supported some of the preparation we do, but ultimately we were ready to play last weekend - you have to be in that situation going into game one. We’ve not gained extra days in terms of preparing for Leicester given the time that we found out, we were just preparing for United still at that point.”
