Heung-Min Son moved into second place on our list of goalscorers in European competition with his two-goal performance against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday evening.
The South Korean moved alongside Jermain Defoe on 23 Euro goals when he slotted home his first to level the scores after our German visitors had taken the lead in the Group D clash, but went ahead of ‘JD’ in emphatic style by crashing home a left-foot volley to put us 3-1 ahead before half-time. He’s still some way behind Harry Kane, who has 45 goals in Europe for us, but Sonny admits he was very happy with his second goal on the night.
“I hit it really well with my left foot and, to be honest, I couldn’t see the ball after I hit it as it went so fast into the net,” he smiled as he talked through his stunning strike. “But we should also talk about the cross from Pierre, how quickly he looked up and saw me and then put in an unbelievable ball for me. I was thinking my only option was to hit it with my left foot and luckily it went in because, if I hadn’t hit it so well, maybe the goalkeeper or defender might have blocked it.”
Although leading 3-1 and Frankfurt’s Tuta receiving a red card, the German side recovered to pull a goal back late on which led to some nervy moments in the final stages. However Sonny, always one to find the positives in a situation, explained that it was good experience for the team.
“I was sitting on the bench when they scored their second and it was uncomfortable. We had chances but didn’t make it 4-2 and so it was a good lesson for everyone. It shows us that in any game, you have to stay focussed right up until the referee’s final whistle. The way we suffered in those last minutes was important and the guys who came on fought really well to keep the win.
“It was a good result, especially after being 1-0 down but the team effort and the way we bounced back was great. There can always be improvements, but it was a fantastic night and an important win.”
