You can now watch Taking Action, Giving Opportunities on SPURSPLAY.
A unique documentary by Premier League Productions as part of their recognition of Black History Month, the feature highlights our work in providing aspiring black coaches opportunities to begin their careers at Spurs.
Since the Premier League was formed in 1992, 30 years ago, just 10 black managers have taken charge of teams in the competition. That number highlights a lack of opportunities, and clubs are taking action – these are the stories of our black coaches.
Focussing on Club legend Jermain Defoe and his start to life as a coach back home with us in N17 this season, the documentary sees Jermain takes us behind the scenes at Hotspur Way, our training base in Enfield, as he shows us just what goes into the day-to-day workings of his new career, coaching our Academy prospects.
The feature also details footballing legend Yaya Toure’s start to life as a coach with us as the cameras catch up with Yaya in his work with our Under-16s.
While Jermain and Yaya are two of the latest black coaches to join our ranks, we have long had a commitment to providing opportunities, such as to the late Ugo Ehiogu. An incredible man who took some of his first few steps as a coach with us in N17 before his untimely passing in April, 2017, Ugo's poignant story is told in this documentary as he left a lasting impact and legacy at Hotspur Way on players, staff and the building itself.
Also featuring in the documentary are the likes of Club legend Chris Hughton, who enjoyed a 27-year spell in lilywhite, first as a player, before becoming a coach and then our Men’s First Team’s assistant manager under Martin Jol. He talks of his early experiences as he moved into coaching with the Club. Chris Powell, Head of Coaching for our Academy and coach for the England national team, also speaks about his role in the development of both players and coaches at the Club.
