Ahead of Sunday’s first home game of the Women’s Super League season against Liverpool, we caught up with defender Amy Turner, who signed for Spurs in the summer.
Amy, thanks for joining us. You’ve been here for almost three months now, so how are you finding your time at Spurs?
“Yeah, I’m settling in now and really enjoying my time. We’ve had a mixed start to the season but we’re starting to find our feet now and we’re just excited for the game this weekend. We’ve been working hard over the international break. There’s been a group of us who have stayed behind, so it’s good because with smaller numbers you get more touches on the ball and get to work on things that you wouldn’t normally get to work on while the internationals are away.”
How do you assess our start to the season so far?
“I think we’ve had a mixed start really. As a group we feel like we’re not quite at the levels we want to be at yet, which is fine because we’ve been working really hard on the training pitch to correct things that we’re not happy with. I think the result against Reading was a big one for us. We were disappointed not to keep the clean sheet and concede in the way that we did so late on in the game, but we take a lot of positives from that game into this weekend and we know we can be capable of putting in some really good performances.”
Liverpool up next and they’ve come up from the Championship, so what are you expecting from this weekend's game?
“We’re expecting a hard working team. You can't underestimate any team in this league, and we've got to expect a battle. We’re feeling confident after picking up a good result against Reading and we’re really excited to play our first home game too, so that will be a massive boost for us, being able to play in front of our home fans for the first time. We can’t wait to get going.”
We’ve been working hard, there’s always a lot of running involved when the internationals are away.
It’s not every week that you play the first home game ever at a new stadium! How have you been preparing for that?
“We trained at Leyton this week so we got a feel for the dressing room and the pitch and everything, so it won’t be the first time that we go there on Sunday, so that’s nice. We’re really excited and want to make our home ground a fortress this season. We hope to start that this weekend with a win and a clean sheet.”
Hopefully we’ll see as many Spurs fans there as possible. How much of an impact can they make when they get behind the team?
“A huge impact. When you see the home fans there cheering you on, it gives you such a lift as a player on the pitch, especially during moments in the game where maybe the momentum isn’t going your way. The fans can make such a big difference and it’s been great to meet them after the games. They’ve supported us in numbers this season in the away games, so it will be great to see them at home too.”
