Welcome back to our new series for 2022/23 - 1 from 30 - as we continue to mark 30 years of the Premier League.
English football's new dawn kicked-off on the weekend of 15/16 August, 1992 as the FA Premier League replaced Barclays League Division One, ending a structure of Division One-Four that had been in place since 1958. Thirty years on, the Premier League is amongst the most watched and most valuable sporting leagues in the world.
In this series, we're featuring a match from those 30 years that corresponds with our next fixture - so, next up, it's one of the big dates on the calendar, Manchester United away, and the arrival of a certain popular Brazilian in August, 2018...
Manchester United 0-3 Spurs - 27 August, 2018
‘Lucas Moura has arrived’, declared Club commentator Rob Daly, and the Brazilian’s brilliant double not only secured a deserved win at Old Trafford, but went a long way to securing him the Premier League’s EA SPORTS Player of the Month for August, 2018.
Both teams had chances - Romelu Lukaku for United, Dele for us - before Harry Kane opened the scoring, heading home Kieran Trippier’s corner five minutes into the second half.
Within two minutes, a classic counter for 2-0. Eriksen's clever curved run beat the offside trap and he was found by Trippier's pass down the right touchline. Eriksen waited and picked out the right pass into the path of Lucas, who angled low across David de Gea into the corner.
The third goal was the icing on the cake on 84 minutes. Harry dropped deep and picked out Lucas, who had plenty to do, central, 40 yards out, faced up by Chris Smalling. He ran past Smalling's desperate lunge, steadied himself and drilled into the far corner again.
We went on to finish fourth and Lucas would later write his name forever in Club folklore with his hat-trick in the Champions League semi-final at Ajax in May, 2019.
