Cristian Romero helped Argentina march on into the knockout stages of the World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Poland in Doha on Wednesday night.
After suffering a shock defeat to Saudi Arabia in their opening game of the tournament, Argentina recovered to win their next two games, with Wednesday’s victory securing top spot in Group C and a round of 16 date with Australia on Saturday.
Defender Cristian played the full game against Poland, who also edged through as runners-up despite their loss on the night.
Earlier in the day, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s journey at the World Cup came to an end when Denmark were beaten 1-0 by Australia in Group D.
The midfielder again completed the full 90 minutes in Al Wakrah, but couldn’t prevent his nation from suffering a second consecutive defeat which left them bottom of the pile with a solitary point to their name.
In the same group, Hugo Lloris was an unused substitute for a much-changed France side in their 1-0 loss at the hands of Tunisia. With the reigning champions already assured of their place in the next round, goalkeeper Hugo was one of a number of players rested for the game in Al Rayyan.
Although they came up short – substitute Antoine Griezmann’s stoppage-time equaliser was ruled out for offside by VAR – France still finished top of the table on six points and will now face Poland on Sunday for a place in the quarter-finals.
With Pape Matar Sarr (Senegal), Eric Dier and Harry Kane (both England), Cristian and Hugo currently into the last 16, Ivan Perisic will look to join them on Thursday when Croatia take on Belgium in their final match in Group F (kick-off 3pm UK).
