Davies ready to face “good generation” of USA stars

Ben Davies is eagerly anticipating Wales’ opening game of what he believes could be “a pretty even group” at the World Cup.

Rob Page’s side take on USA in Al Rayyan tonight (Monday 21 November, 7pm UK) in what will be their first outing at football’s most prestigious tournament for 64 years.

Much has been made of Wales’ achievements to qualify for the showpiece event in Qatar, but now that kick-off in Group B has finally arrived, Ben wants his nation to put the history element to one side and do the business on the pitch in a bid to make it through to the knockout stages, starting with an intriguing tie against the States.

“Of course, we’ve worked hard to get here, it’s a huge achievement to be involved but now it’s here, we want to go as far as we can in the tournament,” said the 29-year-old, who is joined in Wales’ squad by our on-loan defender Joe Rodon.

They’re a nation that probably feel like they’ve got a good generation of players who can do something at this tournament, so it’ll be an exciting game.

Ben Davies on USA

“USA have got a lot of talented players and they’re a nation that probably feel like they’ve got a good generation of players who can do something at this tournament, so it’ll be an exciting game first up, but one we hope we can get something out of.

“We’re going to aim to get out of the group – that’s what we all hope for – and to do that we have to try to pick up results against everybody.

“I think it’s going to be a pretty even group and there could be some harder games than perhaps people are anticipating. But we’re determined to get a result in the first game first of all, and that’s what we’ll be looking to do.”
