Speaking to The Athletic’s Women’s Football Podcast earlier this week, Ashleigh Neville discussed the pride she has to be in her sixth year playing for Tottenham Hotspur.
“This is my Club now. I’ve been here nearly six years and it’s home to me. I don’t want to think of not being here. I’d like to finish my career here. I don’t want to think of the last game when I put on my boots and I’m hoping I’ve still got a good couple of years, but I’d like to think I’m going to do that here at Spurs.
“It’s a massive journey for me to come from when we were in tier two to now playing as a full-time job. I don’t really see it as a job, it’s more still something that I love doing. I love coming to work every day, which is one of the best feelings. I want to keep pushing forward and reaching those targets of appearances, awards and an England call-up.”
Asked what has allowed Ash to be on such good form so far this season, she was quick to praise the people around her.
“It’s just the group of people I’m around. The staff and the Club that I’m at, it’s helped me to excel to be the best I can. I thought last season was my best season but I think at the moment I’m topping that at the start of this season. I’m really happy to continue with that consistency, but I have to say it’s the coaching and the players around me to get to where I am. Playing on the wing in the last few games, now I’m believing that I can go and score goals. I’ve been training in that position and it’s enabled me to put it into practice on the pitch in games.”
Looking ahead to Everton on Sunday, Neville isn’t underestimating the importance of the WSL fixture.
“It’s going to be a tough game. They’ve got some new players and are playing a different style with the manager they’ve got now. We played them in pre-season so we know a little bit. It may be a six-pointer. We’re in a good place and have got a lot of confidence. I don’t think they’re going to come and roll over.”
