60 years ago today - FA Cup retained against Burnley at Wembley

It's 60 years to the day - 5 May, 1962 - that Bill Nicholson's all-conquering team of the early 1960s retained the FA Cup with a 3-1 win against Burnley at Wembley Stadium.

Two of the big guns in the Football League at the time, this was seen as a generational final between our double-winners of 1960/61 and the 1959/60 title winners - greats of the game Danny Blanchflower, Dave Mackay, John White and Jimmy Greaves up against Burnley legends like Jimmy Adamson, their captain and Footballer of the Year, Jim McIlroy and Ray Pointon.

Of course, Greavsie would make his mark with a goal after just three minutes, latching onto Bobby Smith's flick, a quick swivel and low shot beyond Adam Blacklaw. Both teams went close in an all-action first half, Smith's spectacular volley inches wide, Pointer's drive saved at full stretch by Bill Brown.

Burnley levelled via Jimmy Robson's near-post finish on 50 minutes but, crucially, we levelled straight from the restart as a move through the lines involving Blanchflower, Cliff Jones and White ended with Smith controlling White's cross, turning and firing past Blacklaw.

We secured back-to-back FA Cup victories with 10 minutes left. Cliff Jones went up with Blacklaw, the loose ball fell to Terry Medwin, whose goalbound shot was handled on the line by Tommy Cummings. Blanchflower made no mistake from the spot, and was soon taking the trophy from Queen Elizabeth in the Royal Box to parade to our fans.
