Five-star victory over Toffees - match report and reaction

We recorded our biggest win of the season with a 5-0 defeat of Everton on Monday evening following an excellent performance at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Harry Kane netted twice – incredibly his sixth Premier League brace against the Toffees – with Heung-Min Son and Sergio Reguilon also on target while Everton defender Michael Keane got the ball rolling for us when he put through his own net.

Keane – under pressure from Kane - diverted Ryan Sessegnon’s whipped cross past Jordan Pickford in the 14th minute and just three minutes later we doubled the lead, Son drilling a right-foot shot from the edge of the area which went under the Toffees goalkeeper.

It was one-way traffic in our favour and Son should have added a third when through on goal but he was denied by Pickford, who also saved from Matt Doherty, but he could do nothing about our third goal on 37 minutes as Kane finished with typical efficiency after being put through by Doherty.

Reguilon was only on the pitch for 44 seconds when he added our fourth. A half-time substitute for Sessegnon, he was on the end of a Dejan Kulusevski cross from the right to fire home at the far post with his first touch of the game, before Kane rounded off the scoring with a lovely volley from Doherty’s sublime pass.

A five-star show

With the race for the top four starting to heat up, this was almost a must-win game – particularly after defeats in our previous two matches in N17 – and a trip to Old Trafford awaiting us this weekend.

So the performance and victory were very welcome, with everyone in the team playing their part, although it has to be said that Everton were well below par and didn’t offer up too much resistance. They failed to muster a shot on target across the 90 minutes but part of that was due to our control of the match and the professional nature of our performance.

Virtually from the first whistle, we took charge and Son was almost in after 11 minutes but had the ball nicked off his toe at the last minute by Anthony Gordon, however we only had to wait a further three minutes for the opener. Rodrigo Bentancur played a pass out wide to Ben Davies who slipped the ball in behind Seamus Coleman for Sessegnon, he managed to dig out a fine cross and Keane, sliding in to prevent Kane getting to the ball, slammed it past his own goalkeeper. Shortly after it was 2-0, Kane skipping past a challenge to find Kulusevski 30 yards from goal, his clever pass released Son who drilled a right-footed shot which went under Pickford and in.

After Pickford had denied Son and Doherty, we extended our lead as Kane finished in style and the half ended with Everton failing to have a single shot at goal, despite the possession being split 50-50. And we made sure there wouldn’t be any second-half fightback from the visitors with a fourth goal seconds after the interval, Reguilon making an immediate impact off the bench at half-time by slamming home Kulusevski’s cross.

A rare sight of goal for Everton saw Richarlison just fail to reach Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s shot at the back post before we were on the offensive again. Eric Dier skimmed the top of the crossbar with a header from a corner, but from the goal-kick, we quickly won back possession and Doherty clipped a sublime ball over the Everton defence to Kane at the back post and he hit a volley past Pickford.

If it wasn’t already, that was basically game over and it was Pickford who prevented further pain for Everton when he made a fine close-range save to deny substitute Steven Bergwijn, while another sub, Davinson Sanchez, glanced Reguilon’s free-kick just wide in the 83rd minute. The final stages were played out with a minimum of fuss as we made sure of the clean sheet to cap a good night all round.

There was a lovely touch after the final whistle as our former midfielder Dele Alli, who joined Everton in January and came off the bench in the 69th minute on his return to N17, was given a warm and emotional round of applause from the Spurs fans.

Kane gives Everton the blues… again

Striker Kane added to his impressive tally against Everton, with his double making it 13 Premier League goals in 14 games against the Toffees. Only against Leicester (16) has he scored more. Kane also moved above Thierry Henry to sixth in the all-time Premier League scoring charts as he now sits on 176.

Son has now been involved in 11 goals in his last 12 Premier League games (seven goals, four assists).

Team news saw Antonio Conte make one change from the team that started against Middlesbrough last time out as Bentancur returned from injury in place of Harry Winks. Everton included two former Spurs players on their bench with Andros Townsend joining Dele.

Antonio said afterwards: "It was an important win, a really good performance from my players, we played amazing in many aspects, scored five goals and created many chances to improve the score. At the same time, we’ve seen many positive situations. For sure, when we have more days to prepare for the game, we have seen with my staff that it’s very difficult to play against us. Tonight, we played a good game but now, for me, it will be very important what happens on Saturday, because we play against Manchester United."
