Heung-Min Son will certainly sit back and enjoy his flight home to South Korea for international duty this week.
Sonny explained that there’s nothing worse than flying out of the UK on the back of a defeat, and he ensured that wasn’t the case with two goals in our convincing 3-1 victory against West Ham on Sunday.
It might even have been a hat-trick - and a hat-trick of assists for Harry Kane - had he connected with Harry’s cross for the opener. Instead, Kurt Zouma turned into his own net. The pair linked up for 2-0 and again as Sonny wrapped it up with a late third after West Ham pulled a goal back 10 minutes before half-time. That’s 39 goal combinations for the Premier League’s deadliest duo.
It was a fine performance against a team in the fight for a place the top four, a win that lifted us into fifth place, three points behind Arsenal. Naturally, Sonny was beaming before taking that flight home for the final two Asian qualifiers for this year’s World Cup - Iran in Seoul on Thursday, UAE in Dubai next Tuesday - with South Korea already safely in the finals in Qatar.
The performance, the effort, the commitment was just fantastic and for me, we deserved it
“I’m very happy that we won two games in a row before the international break,” said Sonny pitchside on N17 Live. “When you drop points before you go, it’s not a great feeling. Tomorrow, I have a 15-hour flight, so I don’t want to feel heavy inside. Now I feel really free, light, really happy and good.”
With West Ham’s renowned ability from set pieces - that’s how they got back into the game - there was certainly a feeling of relief that Sonny put the game to bed with that late third. As he explained, at 2-1, anything could still happen even though we were in complete control.
“At 2-1 it’s not clear, you are not sure what is going to happen, one set piece, you are always a bit nervous, and you don’t want to concede a goal because we played fantastic,” added Sonny, now up to 13 goals this Premier League campaign.
“After this goal, we were another goal ahead and I really enjoyed it. The performance, the effort, the commitment was just fantastic and for me, we deserved it. The way we played in the first half, created chances, we should have scored many more goals than the three we scored, to be honest. We totally deserved it.
“As players, we take responsibility to get these three points and in the 88th minute, how I felt (when he scored), the fans probably felt the same - that’s why I have a great relationship with the fans and really enjoyed it this afternoon.”
