Harry Kane was delighted to taste that winning feeling against Rangers - and is determined to take that mentality into the start of the season.
And the in-form striker - five goals in three pre-season matches - is not just looking at the Premier League opener at home against Southampton on Saturday 6 August (3pm).
“We look good, we’ve had some great additions, we’re working hard, the manager, all the staff have been fantastic, and we have a great team,” reflected Harry at Ibrox. “But, as always, we have to take it into the season.
“It’s a long season, it’s not just about August or September, it’s a marathon with the World Cup in-between. The squad looks great, everyone is moving in the right direction and there is a really good feeling amongst the fans and us, so it’s down to us to go out there and start the season well.”
Rangers begin their SPL campaign on Saturday and you felt their squad was fully wired in for this match played for the Walter Tull Memorial Cup in front of over 43,000 fans at Ibrox.
They took the lead through Antonio Colak midway through the first half but we’d created chances before and after that and turned things around at the start of the second half as Harry first pinged a shot into the top corner and then drilled home from 16 yards, both assisted by Heung-Min Son.
“Any game you play whether it’s pre-season, during the season, you want to score, you want to feel good, want to feel the back of the net, thankfully I was able to do that,” added Harry. “I thought we played really well as a team. First half, we had three, four, five good chances we should have put away, and in the second half we continued that and took a couple. It was a tough game against a good side and overall, really good preparation.
We wanted to win, we wanted that winning feeling and take that momentum into the rest of pre-season and, hopefully, into the start of the season
“We’re getting sharper, feeling fitter every game and every training session and these are the games you need, tough opposition, feel the game, feel the atmosphere and we were able to do that.
“This felt like a ‘proper’ game, it could have been during the season with the atmosphere, against a good side. We wanted to win, we wanted that winning feeling and take that momentum into the rest of pre-season and, hopefully, into the start of the season.”
