January and February international fixtures for our players
Thu 27 January 2022, 15:31|Tottenham Hotspur
It’s the designated winter break in the Premier League and although there are no European international fixtures taking place, a handful of important games are on the agenda involving some of our players from other continents.
Most of the action from a Spurs perspective is centred around South American qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as the group stage reaches its conclusion.
Emerson Royal and Giovani Lo Celso have reported for duty for Brazil and Argentina respectively, with both nations having already secured their place at the tournament finals ahead of this round of matches.
It’s not quite as straightforward for Davinson Sanchez and Colombia though – they’re currently perched in the fourth and final automatic qualification spot ahead of Peru, but only on goal difference. The fifth-placed team qualifies for a play-off, but any side finishing sixth or below will be eliminated from the competition. Davinson could find himself up against Giovani when Colombia visit Argentina on Tuesday.
Elsewhere, the Africa Cup of Nations continues at pace in Cameroon, with on-loan Pape Matar Sarr forming part of the Senegal squad.
They’re set to face Equatorial Guinea in the quarter-finals on Sunday – Pape is yet to feature at the tournament, having been an unused substitute in three of his nation’s four games to date.
