Burnley edge it in the rain at Turf Moor
Burnley 1-0 Spurs
Wed 23 February 2022, 21:30|Tottenham Hotspur
A wet and windy night at Turf Moor ended in defeat on Wednesday as a second-half goal from Ben Mee gave Burnley the points in the Premier League.
In stormy conditions in Lancashire, a poor first half yielded just one shot on goal, coming for the hosts, although it was far more entertaining after the break with both sides having chances.
Harry Kane headed against the bar, Jay Rodriguez forced Hugo Lloris into a smart save with a close-range header and Dejan Kulusevski curled just wide before the Clarets broke the deadlock in the 71st minute when Mee headed home Josh Brownhill’s free-kick.
We pushed for the equaliser in the closing stages but didn't really test home goalkeeper Nick Pope. Instead it was the home side who came closest to scoring again, Rodriguez putting an effort over the bar from six yards out.
A night to forget
After Saturday’s superb 3-2 victory over Manchester City, this was a quick opportunity to build on that and push ourselves closer to the top four, but it never materialised on a disappointing night in the north west. In truth, it wasn’t too bad of a performance, but we just couldn’t quite click in the final third while Burnley did what they do best, and punished us from a set-piece.
Neither side could really get anything going from an attacking perspective in the first half; the dreadful conditions were clearly not helping and there was just the one shot on target, coming on 14 minutes when Josh Brownhill controlled on the edge of the area and volleyed straight at Hugo Lloris.
We did have better control of possession in the closing stages of the first period and we built a couple of good moves, but the final ball was just lacking and we didn’t trouble opposition goalkeeper Nick Pope. To be fair, it was a similar story for the home side as they too had possession which could have caused us problems with a better final pass.
Just three minutes after the break though, we went mighty close when Heung-Min Son delivered a free-kick in from the right and Kane met it first with a header which crashed against the bar. The hosts responded with Mee heading Dwight McNeil’s free-kick straight at Lloris.
As the game wore on, it opened up as a contest and both teams went close in the 69th minute, Rodriguez drawing an excellent save out of Lloris with a downward header from 10 yards out before we went straight up the other end, Son finding Kulusevski but the latter's left-footed curler just evaded the far upright.
And just two minutes later came the opener. Ryan Sessegnon gave away a free-kick out on the right flank, Brownhill sent over a cross to the back post and Mee got above Cristian Romero to divert the ball back across goal and into the far corner.
It should have then been 2-0 on 83 minutes, Rodriguez somehow firing Mee's fizzing centre over the bar from six yards. At the other end, substitute Lucas Moura smashed over from the edge of the area. Steven Bergwijn was also introduced late on as we went for it in the final minutes, but that one golden chance to level it up proved elusive and we headed back to north London empty-handed.
The pre-match team news saw Antonio Conte name an unchanged starting XI from our win at City. The only changes were on the bench with Sergio Reguilon back – Harvey White dropped out - and Brandon Austin in for Pierluigi Gollini. White was originally named on the bench but was replaced half an hour before kick-off by Dane Scarlett.
