Pape Matar Sarr is an Africa Cup of Nations champion with Senegal!
The young midfielder, who joined us last summer from Metz before being loaned back to the French club for the current season, saw his country triumph on penalties against Egypt at Yaounde’s Olembe Stadium on Sunday night.
After the regulation 90 minutes and additional half-hour period of extra time both ended goalless, it was Liverpool’s Sadio Mane who fired the decisive spot-kick to clinch a first ever AFCON title for Senegal with a 4-2 victory in the shootout.
Pape was an unused substitute on the night, having picked up his first minutes at the tournament during the semi-final win over Burkina Faso on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old now has five senior caps and a winner’s medal to his name.
He’ll now report back to Metz to complete the Ligue 1 season.
Congratulations, Pape!
