We ask the players... who is going to win the World Cup, and why?

The drama, agony and ecstasy continues on football’s biggest stage in Qatar, and, as we’re down to the final four, we asked our players back at base at a snowy Hotspur Way, ‘who is going to win the World Cup, and why’?

A reminder, Ivan Perisic’s Croatia take on Cuti Romero’s Argentina in the first semi-final on Tuesday evening, Hugo Lloris and France take on Morocco on Wednesday evening. Both matches kick-off at 7pm.

Here’s what they had to say...

Matt Doherty

“This is tough because I think France will win the World Cup, they are so good going forward, but I want Lionel Messi to win the World Cup. Sorry Clem, apologies (Clement Lenglet walks by…). I want Messi to win the World Cup so he can finally put to bed the G.O.A.T conversation.”

Clement Lenglet

“Of course, I think France. They have all the quality to win again. They will play Morocco first, then, if we win, I would like to play Argentina because Leo (Messi) and Cuti are good friends, and they deserve to go through to the final as well.”

Emerson Royal

“I think France now. Brazil is gone. But be careful, because Morocco are a good team, strong emotionally, but France just have too much quality.”

Japhet Tanganga

“France, that firepower. Mbappe, Dembele are so good. They just have that quality.”

“It’s France or Argentina in the final for me, and probably just France to win it. It’s that experience of these big games. They’ve been there before and won it before.”

“I’m saying Morocco now. It’s possible. I will support them. They are a good team, and it would be good for football, a different team winning the World Cup. Brazil are out, England are out, France won the last World Cup and Argentina, I’m Brazilian, so I cannot support Argentina! Croatia are also good, but they beat Brazil... so, it’s Morocco for me!”

“Argentina. The Messi factor, and Cuti as well, obviously. And they’re improving, game by game.”

“France, just because of Hugo. He’s the best. Morocco have impressed and Bono (Yassine Bounou, Morocco’s goalkeeper) is very good, but I’d love to see Hugo lift that trophy again.”

“I think Argentina. I just feel like it’s destiny for Messi. So, Argentina-France final, Messi to win it, Argentina 1-0.”

“I like how Morocco play, a lot, look at the game against Portugal. Croatia as well… everyone can win. It’s difficult. Croatia-Argentina, what will happen there? I would like Messi to win. I’m still waiting for Cuti’s goal, as well! If I had to pick one team... Argentina.”
