Five... pre-season matches against French teams

Tue 20 December 2022, 14:00|Tottenham Hotspur

After 39 days away, we're back at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for what is a rarity - a mid-season match - as we take on French side OGC Nice on Wednesday evening (7pm).

Our return to Premier League action draws ever nearer after the break for the World Cup as we travel to Brentford on Boxing Day, and after positive displays in behind-closed-doors matches against Motherwell and Peterborough United, we face the Ligue 1 side in an exhibition in N17.

Don't forget, tickets are on general sale, and if you can't make it, you can watch the stream live on SPURSPLAY.

Here, we take a look back at five pre-season matches against French teams - including one against Wednesday night's opponents OGC Nice during a pre-season training camp in Evian, France back in 2006...

Spurs 3-1 Olympique Lyonnais - 24 July, 2005

The team landed the Peace Cup after this victory over Lyon in Seoul, Korea in the summer of 2005.

We were unbeaten throughout with a 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors, 3-1 win against Sundowns and 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad setting up this final against a Lyon side including the likes of Michael Essien, Florent Malouda and Sylvain Wiltord, with Karim Benzema on the bench.

We did all the damage in the first half as a double from Robbie Keane - later voted MVP of the tournament - and an own goal saw us 3-0 up by half-time. Lyon netted a consolation from the penalty spot in the second half.

Spurs: Cerny, Kelly, Edman (Bunjevcevic), King, Gardner, Routledge, Reid, Tainio (Mendes; Marney), Carrick, Mido (Kanoute), Keane (Defoe).

Spurs 2-1 Girondins de Bordeaux - 13 July, 2006

Dimitar Berbatov and Benoit Assou-Ekotto made their first appearances in the picturesque town of Albertville as the squad kicked-off pre-season preparations for 2006/07 in Evian, France.

Played in front of just 2,000 fans, Edgar Davids also started as Jermain Defoe fired us ahead on 35 minutes, a typical strike from the hitman, taking Danny Murphy's pass, working a yard of space and drilling into the corner from the edge of the box.

Johan Micoud levelled just before half-time and it was left to Academy graduate Kieran McKenna to come off the bench and head home the winner from Reto Ziegler's cross three minutes from time.

Spurs: Cerny, Ifil (McKenna), Assou-Ekotto, Davids, Dawson, Gardner, Routledge (Ziegler), Murphy (Lee), Berbatov (Barnard), Defoe (O'Hara), Reid.

Spurs 1-0 OGC Nice - 14 July, 2006

Academy graduate Lee Barnard had a 'nice' habit of scoring in continental pre-season matches and scored the only goal of this encounter in front of a handful of fans at our training base in Evian.

It was our second game in 24 hours following the win against Bordeaux, and 'Barney' followed his pre-season goals against Falkenbergs (July, 2004) and Club Mauritius (May, 2005) with the winner at the end of the first half, in the right place at the right time to convert Jamie O'Hara's cross.

Ledley King was the headline starter, his first action in three months, but the night belonged to the now sadly-departed Marton Fulop, the Hungarian goalkeeper who passed away in 2015. Fulop made a string of fine saves including three to deny Matt Moussilou, the first his best on 15 minutes, somehow managing to make a block from point-blank range.

Spurs: Fulop, Stalteri, Ziegler, Huddlestone, King (Murphy), Davenport, Routledge (Defoe), Ghaly, Barnard (McKenna), Tainio, O'Hara.

AS Monaco 5-2 Spurs - 4 August, 2013

We had a number of absentees for this match at the Stade Louis II with the likes of Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul, Jan Vertonghen, Sandro and Paulinho all out. By way of contrast, AS Monaco, back in Ligue 1, fielded  high-profile summer arrivals Radamel Falcao, Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez, and they hit the ground running.

Jermain Defoe then went off early - replaced by a certain Harry Kane - and the home side were 3-0 up by the time Kane replied just before the hour. It was then 5-1 before Andros Townsend added a late consolation.

Managed by Claudio Ranieri, AS Monaco went on to finish second in Ligue 1 in 2013/14 and we would meet again in 2016, this time in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. By then, Falcao and Moutinho had been joined by the likes of Bernardo Silva, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Thomas Lemar and a young Kylian Mbappe. They'd reach the semi-finals of the UCL and land their first domestic title since 2000.

Spurs 4-2 PSG - 23 July, 2017

A stone's throw from Disney's Magic Kingdom, Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld scored a couple of magical goals in this International Champions Cup encounter at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

Eriksen's piledriver to level the scores on 11 minutes was worthy of any stage and Alderweireld's arrowed drive to hand us a 3-2 lead eight minutes from time was another strike right out of the top-drawer.

Eric Dier and Harry Kane were also on the scoresheet on an eventful night - six goals and a straight red card for PSG's German international goalkeeper Kevin Trapp for deliberate handball outside his penalty area.

Edison Cavani opened the scoring for PSG, Eriksen levelled and Dier put us 2-1 up, all inside the first 20 minutes. Javier Pastore made it 2-2 at half-time and it looked to be heading that way until Alderweireld's cracker eight minutes from time. Kane's penalty wrapped it up late on.

Spurs (first half): Lloris (c), Walker-Peters, Carter-Vickers, Vertonghen, Davies, Dembele, Dier, Eriksen, Onomah, Nkoudou, Janssen.

Spurs (second half): Vorm, Trippier, Alderweireld, Wimmer, Davies, Dembele (Winks), Wanyama, Oakley-Boothe, Eriksen, Dele, Kane.
