Hugo: "We need to respond in the best way in front of our fans"

Hugo Lloris spoke about the need to deliver over 90 minutes after being undone in 45-minute spells against Chelsea and Arsenal.

We were opened up by the Gunners in the first half of Sunday’s derby, the home side hitting us with a three-goal salvo - all in transition - in the space of 22 minutes.

Nuno made changes at the break and we improved, Heung-Min Son pulled a goal back and we created other chances, but it was a case of too little, too late as it ended 3-1 at the Emirates. That defeat followed a 3-0 loss against Chelsea on 19 September, where, conversely, we were bright and posed problems in a goalless first half before succumbing in the second half.

“When you lose a derby it’s always a bad feeling,” said skipper Hugo, who knows exactly what the derby means after over nine years at the Club. “I just feel a bit sorry for the fans, because, at half-time, trailing by three goals, it’s difficult to explain.

We need to stay calm, stay positive, stick together and respond in the best way next week in front of our fans

“The only positive thing we can talk about is the second half, we changed a little tactically and we were more stable in the middle of the pitch, stronger and more balanced as a team.

“It’s only a few games played, there are a lot of games ahead of us, and I think the most important thing is to analyse the performance and correct the things that didn’t work.

“There were some similar things to the Chelsea game. Against Chelsea, we started very well in the first half but in the second half we dropped a little in our performance. Today was the opposite. We started the first half in a very bad way and, obviously, when you show weakness in the Premier League, your opponent punishes you, simple as that.

“In the second half we showed another face, and this is the one we want to see during 90, 95 minutes, at high level, high intensity.

“It’s part of the process, we need to analyse and learn, very quickly, because it’s now three games with three defeats (in the Premier League), every time with three goals conceded, and we cannot hide the problems. We need to stay calm, stay positive, stick together and respond in the best way next week in front of our fans.”
