Sonny: “We always want to give our best, that’s what I wanted to show”

Heung-Min Son again underlined what this great Club means to him after his latest super show as we toppled Villa 2-1 on Sunday.

Sonny set up both goals in a key 2-1 win as we halted a run of three defeats in the Premier League. The pressure was on - and the release of emotion after Sonny watched his cross turned home by a combination of Villa defender Matt Targett and Lucas Moura was palpable. That goal, just three minutes after Villa had levelled Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s opener, was enough for a deserved victory.

“This means a lot,” he told Spurs TV pitchside. “It’s been a tough September after the internationals, defeats in three games, and I wanted to share the feeling that we want to take big responsibility. I hope they (the fans) felt the passion. We don’t want to give up, we always want to give our best. That’s what I wanted to show, and they shared it with me.

“We’ve had a couple of tough weeks and it was so hard to take. Before we go away on internationals, that (win) feels so, so good. We take a big responsibility for the fans, they don’t deserve this feeling (of the defeats), and we don’t want to play like that. This just feels so good.”

It’s a great win, but we start from zero again. We need that mindset for the rest of the season

Sonny was at his lively best as we racked up 17 attempts on goal. We also had to defend stoutly, particularly against the aerial threat from a tough Villa side who beat Manchester United at Old Trafford last week.

“We completely deserved the win,” added Sonny, three goals in his six Premier League appearances so far this term. “We want to play, even when we lose the ball, we take a big responsibility, we react straight away, we want to win it back again. Without the ball, we’re enjoying pressing as well.

“But this win is not everything. Everything is after (at the end of) the season. It’s a great win, but we start from zero again. We need that mindset for the rest of the season.”
