Ben Davies and Steven Bergwijn have returned to training and Nuno Espirito Santo will make a late decision on the potential participation of our South American players as we return to Premier League action at Newcastle United on Sunday (4.30pm).
Stevie picked up an ankle injury in our Europa Conference League group opener at Stade Rennais on 16 September, and has missed our last five matches. Ben last featured in the squad at Arsenal on 26 September and has recovered from an appendix issue. Ryan Sessegnon remains sidelined after sustaining an injury during the September international break.
Speaking after training on Friday, Nuno told us: “We have problems, like all the international breaks, they disturb, interrupt things, and we have problems. Ryan hasn’t joined the group yet; he’s doing his physical work with sports science. Steve and Ben are with us now, working normally. They are much better and it’s just a matter of time for them to get the right fitness levels.”
Giovani Lo Celso, Cristian Romero, Emerson Royal and Davinson Sanchez are on their way back from South American World Cup qualifiers. Gio and Cristian started all three matches for Argentina, including victory over Peru in the early hours of Friday morning. Emerson also started for Brazil against Uruguay overnight. Davinson didn’t feature for Colombia.
Nuno added: “They are flying now. They are joining us tomorrow, and that will be the right moment to see how they are. The news we have is that they all finished the matches well, so it’s about recovering and then, together, we have to assess them and then decide.”
