At this Saturday’s game against Manchester United, the Club will pay its respects to those that have made the ultimate sacrifice in armed conflict and show support for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.
Ahead of the match, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had the chance to sit down and speak with British Army Veteran Warrant Officer Class II Brian Connor about the importance of celebrating Remembrance Day.
Pierre was able to ask WO2 Brian questions including where he began his military career, what Remembrance Day means to him and why it is important for younger generations to understand and connect with Remembrance Day.
In addition, WO2 Brian shared his own experiences, including his favourite Spurs memory.
WO2 Brian was joined by his colleague Corporal Dave Thompson, British Army Veteran of the Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioners, and during their visit, they were surprised by some special guests including Joe Rodon, Oliver Skipp, Ben Davies, and Heung-Min Son.
After meeting Pierre, WO2 Brian said: “It was an honour to meet and chat with Pierre and it was a wonderful opportunity to share experiences with someone from a different generation and background. I felt a real sense of interest from him to understand the lives, commitment and sacrifices made by people in the services, especially of my generation.
“Hearing Pierre’s stories of how he left home and was living away from his family when he started out in his career really resonated as we often have to do the same. We both gained a lot from sharing our experiences.”
Pierre commented: “It has been a privilege to meet and spend time with Brian. It was so interesting to hear about his stories and his time spent in the Army. It is still incredibly important that we continue to celebrate Remembrance Day, so we never forget those who made great sacrifices.”
Our men’s team will wear special edition Poppy shirts both this Saturday – our closest domestic home fixture to Remembrance Sunday – and for next weekend’s visit to Everton. Our women’s team will also wear Poppy shirts when they host Manchester United in the WSL on Saturday 7 November and against Arsenal on Saturday 13 November.
All match-worn shirts will be signed and auctioned following the matches to raise funds for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.
Before kick-off on Saturday, we will be joined pitch side by 25 members of our Armed Forces Spurs Official Supporters’ Club, representative of the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force. Both managers will lay Poppy wreaths on the centre circle on behalf of both clubs.
We shall then observe a minute’s silence during which the Last Post will be played by Corporal (Retired RAF) Andrew John Lofthouse, former Principal Trumpet of the Central Band of the Royal Air Force.
As a further mark of respect, our corner flags at this weekend’s game have been designed to display and honour the names of the former Spurs players who lost their lives across both World Wars.
Our ever-popular dual-branded Poppy pin badges are on sale online and at the Tottenham Experience for a donation of £4.99 to the Royal British Legion.
