We want to be the best we can be, Antonio will get us there - Ben

Ben Davies described Sunday’s performance in a gritty goalless draw against Everton as 'definitely something to build on'.

Antonio Conte’s first Premier League game as our new Head Coach proved a typically intense affair at Goodison Park with clear-cut chances few and far between and a determination from both teams to come through unscathed.

We came closest to breaking the deadlock when Giovani Lo Celso’s curling effort from 22 yards cannoned back off the post on 87 minutes. Sergio Reguilon volleyed over our best chance of the first half. At the other end, Everton were awarded a penalty on 64 minutes that was soon overruled by VAR and referee Chris Kavanagh.

“It was a difficult game,” Ben told Spurs TV at Goodison. “We played well in patches, created chances in patches, but we also had to suffer in periods defensively. Overall though, definitely something to build on.

“We’ve got a lot to work on and a lot to improve on. Antonio is a world-class manager who is going to bring his ideas in and will work us hard to make sure we do it right. As players, we’re desperate to get going.

“We haven’t been at our best and he has an idea of how we can get there. I’m sure after the international break we’ll be really be working hard and trying to be the best we can be. There is no doubt in my mind he can get us there.”

Playing on the left side of our central defensive three, it’s been noticeable in Antonio’s two matches so far that Ben has pushed forward to join attacks - he was involved in the third goal against Vitesse last week and found himself in space 30 yards from goal in the second half against Everton, his piledriver whistled just wide.

Ben added: “It’s a position I’ve played for the national team a lot and I enjoy playing there. If you move the ball quickly it can open up areas to drive into and the manager is encouraging that. Look, there is a long way for us to go to get our patterns and our rhythm, but it’s promising signs so far.”
