We're back - and that means it's time for N17 Live presenter Ben Haines and Club commentator Rob Daly to look ahead to Sunday's belter against Leeds United at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (4.30pm).
Let's get ready to rumble!
After a fortnight's break for internationals, Sunday's return against Leeds represents the first of 13 games taking in three competitions in 42 days - how does it feel to be back?
Ben: “I can’t wait. I’m buzzing that the Premier League is back, as much as it’s been great to see Harry Kane score all those goals for England, there is nothing like watching Spurs, especially at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium! It’s been great to see so many players get game time and do well in the internationals, including Stevie Bergwijn’s vital goal for Holland.”
Rob: “It’s been a positive international break for many of the players - Harry Kane scoring seven goals in two games for England is just ridiculous, and possibly just what he needed to get back amongst the goals for Spurs in the Premier League. I also like that the players who haven’t been away have no doubt been on a mini 'Boot Camp’, where I’m sure they’ve quickly learned about everything required under Antonio Conte. It’s a nice stretch now without international football for Antonio to really get his teeth into the squad and balance all those obligations of Premier League, Europa Conference League and Carabao Cup until the New Year.”
Leeds, Leeds, Leeds
One of the stand-out teams on their return to the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa last season - what do the guys make of Leeds' form so far this time around?
Rob: “Leeds are picking up a bit. They’ve really missed Kalvin Phillips - the stats show the difference in the points they collect when he’s out of the team, much lower - and his return is vital. Raphinha has been in good goalscoring form of late, and I believe he’s just an unbelievable footballer, when he plays, he’s usually the star man, so proactive in picking up the ball and trying to make things happen. Leeds were actually a bit disappointing at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last season, Spurs beat them quite comfortably (3-0 in January), but then the loss at Elland Road in May (1-3) was a tough one. I’m not sure what to expect, but let’s see if Antonio Conte has managed to relay some of his ideas to the players since the draw at Everton last time out.”
Ben: “I think Leeds have changed a bit this season. They just look a little different. Maybe we’re seeing things level out a bit, maybe the nature of the Premier League is taking its toll, and they’ve had a couple of injuries to key players. Having said that, under Bielsa, they are all prepared to work hard, and that’s one thing we’ll have to be aware of this weekend. I remember the away game at the end of last season - I still think Harry’s goal was onside (that would have put us 2-1 up), but as soon as that was disallowed, it changed the momentum of the game and they were ruthless, so energetic. This time around, I expect us to take the game to Leeds, especially as Antonio and his staff have had a couple of weeks to work with a number of the players back at Hotspur Way during the international break.”
Random question...
A tough one this time around! Harry Kane's seven goals for England this week took him past Jimmy Greaves (44) and level with Gary Lineker (48). So chaps, you can pick one of them - who and why?
Rob: “This is impossible! I’ll defer to the numbers on the striker argument and go with Jimmy Greaves. His strike rate was unreal – 266 goals in nine seasons at Spurs (December, 1961 until March, 1970) is madness! That’s basically averaging 30 goals a season! Also, our older fans still insist he’s the greatest they’ve ever seen play.”
Ben: “I’d go with Greavsie as well. I never got to see him play and, whenever I speak to my dad about Spurs, he’s the player he always talks about and says he was just unbelievable. I would have loved to have watched him live.”
