Four games remaining, and Serge Aurier is determined to leave everything out there.
“We have to finish well, with no regrets,” said the Ivory Coast skipper after a impressive display of attacking full-back play and claiming two assists in our 4-0 win against Sheffield United on Sunday.
Both assists were key in a convincing victory. The first finally unlocked the door after 35 minutes of control in the first half, Serge’s clever, chipped pass over United’s back line found Gareth Bale’s run, and the Welsh star angled a finish over Aaron Ramsdale. The third was a perfectly weighted roll into Gareth’s path, and he did the rest, drilling home his hat-trick. Heung-Min Son capped it with the fourth.
"I’m always happy to give the assists,” reflected Serge. “Today, I’m lucky, Gareth made the run and I found him. It’s perfect movement. I’m happy for the team, because we scored four goals, a clean sheet, yes, it’s the best night.”
Both players and coaching staff recognised the need to respond to last weekend’s Carabao Cup Final loss against City, again echoed by Serge.
“After the final against City, everyone was angry,” he added. “City were better, and they scored the one goal. It’s difficult to lose like that. We came back into training with good energy because we knew we had five games before the end of the league, and we need to finish well.
“Now, we need to keep this energy. We played well with and without the ball and we need to stay this way, it’s the best way to finish the league, and you never know. We have four games left and we have to keep going.”
