Erik Lamela has become only the fourth Spurs player to win the coveted Goal of the Season award from BBC’s Match of the Day.
The Argentine’s magnificent ‘rabona’ in the north London derby at Arsenal in March went up against another nine goals in the vote on the programme after Sunday’s Premier League finale - eight Goal of the Month winners, plus two from May.
Those 10 goals went to a public vote for a final three with Erik up against Mo Salah’s control and finish on the break for Liverpool at West Ham in December and Edinson Cavani’s lob for Manchester United against Fulham earlier this month.
Pundits Ian Wright and Alan Shearer both went for Erik’s strike. Wright said: “They are all great goals, obviously. I loved Mo Salah’s because it was a quality touch and finish, but I have to go for the impudence of that fella from Tottenham. It was a beautiful goal.”
Shearer added: “I agree with Wrighty. Salah’s was brilliant, but this was an incredible goal from Lamela.”
Our players have now taken the Match of the Day three times in the last six seasons - Erik joining Dele (2015/16) and Heung-Min Son (2019/20). Paul Gascoigne’s wonder free-kick in the 1991 FA Cup semi-final win against Arsenal won the 1990/91 award.
Erik's goal has now claimed the Goal of the Season award from Match of the Day, at the London Football Awards and our Club awards, voted for by our supporters.
