Lamela wins Premier League's Goal of the Season award

Erik Lamela has won the Premier League’s Budweiser Goal of the Season award for his marvellous ‘rabona’ against Arsenal.
The Argentine international fired us ahead in stunning fashion at the Emirates Stadium on 14 March, wrapping his left foot around the back of his right to hook the ball into the bottom corner, despite there being three players plus the goalkeeper in front of him.
It was the second time the attacker has scored a rabona for us, having previously executed it against Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League in October, 2014.
Sadly, we ended up losing 2-1 in the derby with Erik sent off for a second bookable offence in the second half.
Nevertheless, his moment of magic has been universally lauded as Goal of the Season, with the Premier League prize the latest in a string of accolades – the strike also claimed the Goal of the Season award from the BBC’s Match of the Day, at the London Football Awards and our own Club awards, as voted for by our fans, having initially been chosen as the Premier League’s Goal of the Month for March.
It’s the second time is as many seasons that one of our players has won the Premier League’s official Goal of the Season award after Heung-Min Son’s incredible solo effort against Burnley in December, 2019, claimed last year’s honour.
Erik saw off competition from James Maddison (for Leicester at Manchester City), Manuel Lanzini (for West Ham against us), Ola Aina (for Fulham against West Brom), Sebastien Haller (for West Ham against Crystal Palace), Mohamed Salah (for Liverpool at West Ham), Bruno Fernandes (for Manchester United against Everton), Jesse Lingard (for West Ham at Wolves) and Edinson Cavani (for Manchester United against Fulham) for this latest prize.

Speaking to us a few weeks ago after collecting the Club’s Goal of the Season award, Erik said: “Of course it has a different feeling to do it in the derby – these games are completely different to other ones and it’s a very, very special goal. Honestly, I just decided in that moment to shoot like that. It was one second. Of course, I dream a lot about goals like that, especially in a derby, but it was in one second that I decided to shoot like that.”
