Harry Kane headed home his first goal of Euro 2020 to seal a 2-0 victory for England against old rivals Germany at Wembley on Tuesday evening.
In the Three Lions’ biggest game at the tournament so far and in front of a raucous home crowd, the skipper delivered, playing a role in the build-up to Raheem Sterling’s 75th-minute opener before stooping to brilliantly head Jack Grealish’s cross into the net from six yards out with four minutes of normal time remaining, securing a famous win.
It was England’s first victory over Germany in a knockout tie since the fabled World Cup triumph of 1966 and saw them through to a quarter-final clash with either Sweden or Ukraine in Rome on Saturday.
Harry’s night could have ended early when he went to ground during the second half after taking a knock to his knee, but after a brief pause he was able to continue.
He ended up completing the full match and told BBC Sport at full-time: “It’s an amazing day, an amazing game, here at Wembley like this, it’s just a moment that none of us will ever forget. It was a great performance, 2-0, another clean sheet, just the perfect afternoon so we’ll enjoy this one but of course we know that we’ve got another big one on Saturday now. It was an amazing feeling (to score), obviously any striker wants to be scoring goals so it’s nice to score my first in this tournament and hopefully I can score a couple more from now until the end.”
