Internationals - Harry leads England to win in opener, Euro 2020 latest

Sun 13 June 2021, 16:43|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Kane led England to victory in their opening game of Euro 2020 on Sunday, captaining the side to an important 1-0 win against Croatia at Wembley.

Earning his 55th cap, skipper for the 33rd time, chances were few and far between for Harry, although he almost added to his 34 international goals when he was close to turning Mason Mount's cross in the second half.

Harry played 82 minutes as Raheem Sterling converted the winner from Kalvin Phillips' pass on 57 minutes. It's the 'Auld Enemy' Scotland next for England in Group D on Friday (8pm). Scotland open their tournament against the Czech Republic tomorrow (2pm).

Staying with Euro 2020, a number of our players were in action on Saturday.

Toby Alderweireld earned cap number 110 and played the full 90 as Belgium were comfortable 3-0 winners against Russia in Group B. Belgium face Denmark next on Thursday (5pm).

Gareth Bale (cap 93), Ben Davies (61) and Joe Rodon (15) all played their part as Wales battled back from 1-0 down to earn a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in Group A. All three played a full shift as Kieffer Moore's header on 74 minutes secured a crucial point. Wales now take on Turkey in Baku on Wednesday (5pm).

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (42 caps) started and missed a penalty as Denmark lost 1-0 to Finland on a traumatic evening in Copenhagen.

As we all know, football took a back seat as our popular former midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch just before half-time. Thankfully, the latest news from the DBU on Sunday morning was that Christian's condition was stable, and he continues to be hospitalised for further examination.

Elsewhere...

Heung-Min Son was an unused substitute as South Korea beat Sri Lanka 5-0 in World Cup qualifying last week, but he was back in the side, wearing the captain's armband and on target as his country beat Lebanon 2-1 in another Qatar 2022 qualifier in Goyang on Sunday. Sonny scored from the penalty spot to take his tally to 27 international goals in 93 caps. South Korea are through to the third round of Asia qualifying.

Meanwhile, Serge Aurier played the full 90 as the Ivory Coast played out a goalless draw against Ghana at the Cape Coast Stadium on Friday evening.

Congratulations, Maksim!

Academy youngster Maksim Paskotsi was part of the Estonia squad that landed the Baltic Cup last Thursday. Estonia beat Latvia 2-1 in Tallinn, and Maksim was off the bench early to replace Marten Kuusk after 27 minutes. That was Maksim's fifth senior cap - he turned 18 in January.
