Heung-Min Son’s eyes are on the prize as he continues to tear it up in pre-season.
The prize? Well, it’s more of a date - Sunday 15 August - as champions Manchester City arrive at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a heavyweight clash on the Premier League season’s opening weekend.
Sonny has racked up two goals and three assists in his two pre-season friendlies so far at Colchester last week and MK Dons on Wednesday night. Now it’s a trip to Chelsea (Wednesday) and a home derby against Arsenal (Sunday week, 8 August) in The Mind Series – then City await.
“It’s still pre-season, some of the guys still aren’t here (after international duty this summer), but we will try to be positive, try to get our fitness, our sharpness, this is most important for pre-season,” said Sonny at Stadium MK.
“We’re working really hard to be fit for the start of the season, not fit for pre-season, so now big games are coming against Chelsea and Arsenal, and we look forward to playing against them, but obviously we want to push as hard as possible for the start of the season.
The guys have been working hard to make us proud, to make the fans proud... the energy is there, the positivity is there
“I’ve only played two games, but it’s been really positive. The guys have been working really hard to make us proud, to make the fans proud. It’s pre-season, the energy is there, the positivity is there, and it isn’t long until the season starts, so I hope we can get a strong start.”
Asked at MK about his new contract, and playing in front of Spurs fans again - 6,000 made the trip to Buckinghamshire - Sonny added: “I couldn’t wait to sign the contract. I said before, it’s already an honour to play at this big club and I just want to continue. I want to shout to the fans, they keep supporting us, amazing. I’ve been here for many, many years and we will work as hard as possible to make you proud and happy.
“We miss them, we play for them. Football is about all fans, not just players. I’m grateful fans are back in the stadium. I couldn’t wait. I really enjoyed it today and at Colchester, I can’t wait to play in our beautiful stadium again.”
