Club Ambassador and former captain Gary Mabbutt has now called over 3,000 vulnerable and elderly Spurs fans during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since March, 2020, Gary, who made 629 appearances for us between 1982 and 1998, has been making daily phone calls to vulnerable and elderly supporters who have been isolating or celebrating special occasions.
Tottenham Hotspur Twitch presenter, Matt Tarr, had the opportunity to speak with Gary about his phone calls and how he felt to have hit such a huge milestone.
As a surprise, the Club arranged a selection of thank you videos to be sent in from grateful fans who Gary has spoken to during the pandemic.
Lifelong Spurs fan Graham Sharp said: “It was a real pleasure to receive Gary’s call on my 75th birthday. He was so generous with his time, and I will never forget his kindness. He deserves all the respect and thanks that we can give. Thank you, Gary.”
Spurs fan Ray Gates said: “Thank you for all the hard work you put in for being an ambassador of our football club. You made a phone call to me in January when I was COVID positive - it was a massive pick me up to hear your voice and have a chat about the club. I hear you have made over 3,000 calls to fans now – amazing. We want to say thank you, to you, for picking us up throughout the pandemic.”
After watching the heartfelt messages, Gary said: “Over the last 16 months, I’ve spent two hours a day speaking to fans from the age of 70 to 95. By just talking to someone for a few minutes a day, you get a good understanding of whether they are in good spirits or struggling. After what has been a challenging year for so many, being able to bring a small sense of joy to our fans has been incredibly worthwhile. It was a great surprise to see and hear from some of them and I look forward to speaking to many more fans in the future.”
