Sonny thanks ‘everyone who helped me’ as he reaches century milestone

Typically, Heung-Min Son turned the attention elsewhere after delivering another milestone in his Spurs career on Saturday.

A little over a fortnight since winning FIFA’s prestigious Puskas Award for his stunning goal against Burnley, Sonny provided the finish Harry Kane’s pass deserved to put us 2-0 up against Leeds United and in doing so, scored the 100th goal of his Spurs career. Harry was also on target and an impressive 3-0 win was secured by Toby Alderweireld’s header from Sonny’s corner in the second half.

The South Korean star has become the 18th player to score a century of goals for the Club, joining the likes of Jimmy Greaves (top on 266 goals), Bobby Smith (208), Cliff Jones (159), Glenn Hoddle (110), modern-day greats Teddy Sheringham (124), Robbie Keane (122) and Jermain Defoe (143) and, of course, team-mate Harry, who is up to 205.

“It is really special but to do my job I need the help of my team-mates and the fans, they always support me, even when I’ve had bad moments,” reflected Sonny on Saturday.

“To score 100 goals in front of the fans would be the best feeling ever. It’s a massive achievement for me, I’m really grateful and I just want to say thanks to everyone who helped me score 100 goals for Spurs.”

I’m really proud and really happy. I just hope I can see the fans again as soon as possible in this beautiful stadium

Personal pride and achievement aside, Sonny was delighted to contribute to an important victory against Leeds after two draws and two defeats in our last four in the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men were full of energy as expected but didn’t seriously trouble Hugo Lloris in 18 attempts at goal. We were in control throughout, had 20 attempts ourselves, and clinical.

Sonny added: “Getting back to winning ways is always important, especially starting the year with positive energy... it’s very important to finish this game and the performance was absolutely fantastic.

“We’ve had some games where we’ve scored the first goal, but dropped points, so, especially today, we pushed, and the previous matches were a good lesson for us. At 2-0, you could feel in the dressing room we wanted to score the third goal, you could feel the positive energy, we scored that third goal and it’s a really good example for us for the rest of the season.”
