Ahead of Sunday’s trip to Brighton in the Premier League (7.15pm), Jose Mourinho reiterated his message before we played Sheffield United a fortnight ago.
The Blades remain bottom but had just picked up their first win of the campaign before we travelled to Bramall Lane on 17 January. We performed well and deserved our 3-1 win that day - 10 days later, they won at Old Trafford.
Brighton are 17th ahead of the weekend’s fixtures, albeit five points ahead of the drop zone. However, they’ve lost only eight of their 20 games so far - compared to double-figure defeats for the teams around them - drawn five of their last eight and their last two losses have been 1-0.
“Every game is tricky,” said Jose. “The first can lose at home to the bottom, like it happened on Wednesday night. When we went to Sheffield United, I said exactly that, don’t look at them as the bottom of the table, because any team can beat any team, but to win football matches, we cannot make mistakes like we made against Liverpool.”
Jose's press conference
Harry Kane will miss out at Brighton with ankle damage, and Jose said: “Harry Kane is Harry Kane, you know... there are players in some teams that are not replaceable. But one thing is to have like last season three or four attacking players all injured at the same time, and another thing is to (just) have Harry Kane, because of course we have Carlos Vinicius, Steven Bergwijn, Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela, Gareth Bale. It’s a different situation, because we have attacking players.”
On Gareth’s potential involvement at the Amex, Jose added: “It’s a crucial moment for him, he is feeling better and better, and of course when you lose a player of Harry’s quality and dimension, the other guys have to step up. Hopefully he can help us."
Giovani Lo Celso and Dele remain sidelined and Jose told reporters that Sergio Reguilon, missing for the Liverpool game due an injury sustained in training on Tuesday, could be out for ‘three weeks/one month’.
