Gunners claim victory in women's derby

Spurs Women 0-4 Arsenal Women

Sun 08 August 2021, 19:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Four new arrivals made their first appearances for Spurs Women as Arsenal ran out 4-0 winners in Sunday's pre-season friendly derby at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Molly Bartrip, Maeva Clemaron and Chioma Ubogagu all started the game with goalkeeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela impressing off the bench as the Gunners got on top in the second half.

It might have been a different outcome - Angela Addison was inches away from an equaliser just minutes before Katie McCabe doubled Arsenal's lead from the penalty spot on 74 minutes. It wasn't to be though, and the visitors ran in two late goals for the final 4-0 scoreline.

The first half was somewhat cagey with biggest threat from both teams on the counter. Jess Naz and Addison found pockets of space and Ashleigh Neville, as ever, looked to push forward from left-back.

The only goal of the half came on the break on 34 minutes as Beth Mead played in Anna Patten and the cross from the right was headed home off the underside of the crossbar by Alex Hennessy.

Earlier, Becky Spencer and Clemaron combined to keep out Lisa Evans while at the other end, Addison won possession high up only for her and Naz to get their wires crossed on the pass and on the stroke of half-time, Neville picked out a fine pass in behind to Naz, but Simone Boyle was across before she could pull the trigger.

Korpela was straight into the action as Arsenal turned the screw in the second half. She made two double-saves to first deny McCabe and Boyle, then reactions to keep out Frida Maanum and Mead. Evans went close twice and Anna Patten headed over Evans' cross.

We had chances though. Naz fired just over from the left angle and we were inches away from an equaliser as Kerys Harrop won possession and Josie Green played in Addison, who shot across Manuela Zinsberger but inches wide.

There was always hope we'd find a leveller but Arsenal took a grip on proceedings from the penalty spot on 74 minutes. Mead was tripped by Scarlett Williams and McCabe hammered into the roof of the net from 12 yards. Korpela saved well again from Jupp and Isabella Lane had a late chance after Zinsberger raced out of her area only to clear straight to her, but Arsenal got back to clear with the net empty.

The visitors stretched their lead in the final minutes as first Patten rifled home off the post after another fine save from Korpela on 89 minutes and then Hennessy tapped home from close range from Evans' cross in added time.
