Lucas Moura quickly turned his attentions to this week’s UEFA Europa League qualifier against Lokomotiv Plovdiv after defeat in our Premier League opener against Everton on Sunday.
There was no hiding the forward’s disappointment after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal secured the points for Everton at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Dele and Matt Doherty saw our best chances saved by Jordan Pickford in an even first half, but we struggled to create again after Calvert-Lewin’s header on 55 minutes.
“I’m very sad, very upset,” said Lucas. “The feeling is very bad. It’s not the way we wanted to start.
“The players are upset because we know how important this game was. The first game of the season and it's so important to start well, to start with three points.
We don’t have time to cry. We have another important game in three days, and we need to be ready
“That’s the game. We need to look forward now and try to do better. We know we have the quality to do better, and I’m sure we will.
“We don’t have time to cry. We have another important game in three days, and we need to be ready.”
Games will come around quickly in this unprecedented start to the season, and Lucas is well aware of the stakes as we take on the Bulgarian Super Cup winners in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League. It’s a one-off tie, no second leg, winners on the night going through to the third qualifying round.
“It’s only one game, and if we lose, it’s bye-bye,” said Lucas. “We need to go there with the right mentality, very strong in our minds and go there to qualify, because it’s a competition we want to win, and we have the quality to win.”
